carb questions in a 302

heres the story

-- A while back i took out the original 5.0 on a 1984 mustang. when i took off the carb, there were little metal shavings lining it. it felt like sand. i hadn't experienced any problems with oil, and nobody could have poured anything in my gas tank. To this day i could never think of why or how this could have happened. Any ideas?
