I purchased a Cobra kit 70% completed from an estate sale around 4 years ago. I am almost finished and now I need help to get a title for the car.
The estate sold it "as is" with no ID number. Tennessee

Since every State has their own system, you might state which STATE you are in. This will get responses from people within your State and be more useful than a smattering of info from all 50.
Not sure about TN but I would be willing to bet the following applies. Do not go to highway patrol or DMV for vin until your positive what they need. Even if you get reassigned a new vin#, you will have to have a plate or some type of stamping on the vehicle showing its original vin so the new vin# can be applied. Translation: The car has to have some id on it matching some paperwork, otherwise they have no way of knowing if the car you brought them matches up to the paperwork. There are companies out there that make plates that you can engrave the number you need on them. Good luck.
I know in Kansas the DMV and highway patrol office asked for a certificate of origin and a reciept from where I got my motor. I would suggest finding out who made the frame and body, see if they can get you some ID for the car. I would also contact the Highway Patrol just to see what they are going to want.
You should be able to get help from the kit manufacturer. They were helpful and supportive of my situation when I lost my vin tag driving between the DMV and the CHP. I did have a pink slip and title but no way to verify it belonged to the car I was driving. It's well worth the effort and sooooo satisfying to bolt on that license plate. Good luck!!
