Default 302 Engine Serial Numbers?

Does anybody know if the 302 engine has ID numbers (serial numbers) stamped or cast into the block or are there casting numbers that just indicate the vintage of the cast?

Smile ID small block

I think they stamp the serial # on the block behind the intake. I do not know what year they started do this.

If it's like most other Ford engines, there is a casting number on the side of the block towards the front I believe. I've had several 351W's and several FE's....they're generally all in the same spot.

I'm sure that there is a casting number on the block but I had an iquiry on my Cobra which is for sale and the interested party said he had a cop friend that would check on the engine numbers to see if it was reported stolen. That would mean that every block would have it own unique number (like a VIN).. I have my doubts if thats true but I thought I'd check...

There is a casting number that will identify the year the block was cast. It is on the passenger side and is normally blocked by the starter motor. I had to unbolt my starter motor and there it was E7TE which identified my block as a 1987 casting. Turned out to be a 1987 HO motor with a high nickle content block.
