Ugrading a 302 with supercharger?

Does adding a Supercharger to a 302 make sense?Does anyone have real experience with a Supercharger with this kind of setup? If so what Supercharger would you recomend?BTW my car is carbureted.

Check into a Paxton. Hot setup for your engine.

powerdyne

I installed a powerdyne bd- 11a on an injecteted 1993 302 with the standard pistons [ not forged ] 6# boost. So far it works fine, no fuel pump change no injector change. Quite noticible increase in power, they say 85 to 90 more HP,I don't know. One thing I do know is to not expect any help whatsoever from Powerdyne in Lancaster, not only is Nick in customer service no help, He'll argue with you.

I think I might want to have a forged lower-end for a blower.

Hey, it's just a thought.

I checked at car review.com .The reviews for paxton Superchargers were quite grim. One reviewer compared them to Ebola virus ! The Powerdyne reviews were mixed.A lot of reviewers seem to feel they wasted there money

Maybe only people with bad experiences post reviews?

I reckon If you are running carburettored engine then you should go for a positive displacement blower i.e. a Roots style blower.

Weiand and B&M do a nice kit thats a straight bolt on to the small block windsor. Check out page 84 of their on line catalogue: Weiand Supercharger Catalogue

Cheers

The Weiand supercharger looks pretty cool.I wonder if you would have to chop a hole in the hood for it? Anyone know how reliable these are?

I had a Vortech on a '90 Mustang 5.0. Car ran great for several years stock bottom end, edelbrock heads, cam, intake, etc. Unfortunately the extra stress from the blower pully eventually cracked the harmonic balancer (crappy design honestly with a very weak point where the key is on the factory balancer).

Car had about 60K on it when I sold it. The newer designs are supposed to be much nicer (and quieter, my A trim was LOUD).

I have a Paxton (vintage) on my GT-350. Go for it. Craig Conley @ Paradise Wheels can help you figure out what will work best for your situation.

not my experience at all. They can require some intense troubleshooting to sort out. You just have to keep at it.

I guess I need to post a review @ carreview.com, but I'm too busy enjoying the car.

I have a Kenne Bell supercharger with EFI. It has a very low profile and fits under the hood no problem. Most of your Mustang racers upgrade to Kenne Bell. http://www.kennebell.net/supercharge.../mustang50.htm

I've got a 1991 302c.i. fuel injected in my FFR and have a Vortech gear driven supercharger installed. Everthing else in pretty much standerd on the engine. Have had it going on 3 years and absolutely no complaints. Makes a world of difference as far as extra horsepower, 85 to 100 is my best guess. Go for it.

Excaliber 04-27-2009 11:08 PM

Kenne Bell was also used on a few of the original factory Excalibur Cobras, for what it's worth. The 302 is a VERY strong engine in general. If I could only do one mod when installing a supercharger it would be forged pistons. Stock pistons do in fact work well most of the time, even people running nitrous get away with stock pistons, at least up to a point.

I don't know where the line is with boost pressures or nitrous shots, but I'm sure when you do cross it and the first thing to go would be the pistons.

Ordered a 302 with a Wieand blower from Suncoast Cobra and it was a disaster. Blower sat too high in the BDR Cobra and required cutting of the hood to fit. Ended up with a 347 stroker, same power and no problems.

he was looking for a supercharger that will work with his carburetor engine.

But those K. Bell units are sweet.

You guys did notice that Richard's last post on this thread was almost 3 years ago, and his last post on Club Cobra was 2 years ago, right?

Excaliber 04-29-2009 12:14 AM

So, it really doesn't matter WHAT he was looking for, the thread is still valid! :)
