Cleveland Rebuild starting now
Hi all,
i'm stopped my plans switching from 351C to FE for a Year, going now to rebuild my Cleveland and have some Questions about.
The new cam:mech roller Crane #528371
New lifters are:mech roller, Crane Ultra Pro #44570-16
Cam Timing is: TAPPET @.020
Lift: Opens Closes ADV Duration
Intake 39 BTDC 65 ABDC 284 °
Exhaust 80 BBDC 34 ATDC 294 °
Crane strongly recommends NOT to use restrictors as they are in now.
Is anybody running mech roller lifters with restrictors in a Cleveland, made some experiances about that topic?
Are you guys interested in a pictured build report ??

Hey Terry! Westcott- I would be interested in the build as well. My first car was powered by a 351C, and it was the first engine I rebuilt. Even with the 2bbl heads, it never ceased to amaze me- especially what I put it through. Again, id like to see some build info and pics!

On hold.............
My project is on hold because of the spare parts delivery time, sorry!
I'd like getting all the needed spares before the complete disassembly.
Parts i'm waiting for:
-#MOR-20558 Moroso kicked out front sump oil pan, 7quart
-#MOR-24558 Moroso pickup
-#CRN-52970-1 steel crane distributor gear

-#SES-5-65-04-201 TIMING COVER 351C/M 400M
Estimated delivery date from summit is April, 4th.
The moroso oil pan was necessary after a Canton pan and pickup auction on ebay wasn't that succesfully.......... Paid for the part and delivery but nothing happend, dispute is still open.
On the other hand i'm waiting for Crane distributor spare parts for my 1000-1605 high performance distributor.
Since last year, after a distributor rotor failure caused ignition module damage, i'm still waiting for the module, cap and rotor !!!!
Crane customer service promised sending the parts next month, this was in August 2006
Delivered parts from summit, waiting on the bench:
-New taylor spiral pro silicon ignition cables
-New set of engine gaskets
-#CRN-44570-16 Crane ultra pro mech. roller lifters
-#CRN-528371 Crane mech. roller cam, RPM 3200-7200; Adv. Dur. 284 Int./294 Exh.; Valve Lift .560 Int./.585 Exh.;
-#PTP-6-503 Prothane polyurethane motor mounts
-#SLP-224-41166V Sealed power HV oil pump
The pushrods length will be defined during assembly because here in Germany experienced cleveland bilders availlability is going to zero
Old parts to be used as carry over:
- CS Shelby Valve covers
- 4-bolt CJ block
- Restrictor kit
- External oil support line
- Complete engine screw set 12-point stainless from ARP
- ARP bolts for heads and mains
- Edelbrock water pump
- Edelbrock modified dual plane intake with removable divider wall insert
- Modified FE expansion tank to fit the Cleveland
- Eagle H-Beam rods, domed, for higher CR, 11:1
- 2V open chamber heads, ported and reworked for roller rockers

set up with 2.5 in. filter
Again, sorry for my bad english writing.
I'll keep you updated,
Westcott
PS: In the meantime i changed my radiator setup to the more original angled position with cover on top and center clip fixation, twin blowers in front.

Westcott - I'm looking forward to your build with pictures.
Having been to Germany and France about 6 times, I would like to assure you that your english is pretty darn good. You guys are always saying your english is not very good, but it is more than enough to communicate well.

Great looking car!
I was just discussing the build up of a 351C with a friend tonight. A 500hp 408C would be a powerhouse and still allow the use of our current headers, pipes etc.....not to mention the weight savings.
Keep us all posted with gallery pics.
Best to you and the build,
Jeff

Blykins,
what do you mean by pressure fed?
Crane strongly recommends not to use restrictors, but the instructions look like universal for all crane lifters.
I'll give them a call today.

Some new solid roller lifters have an orifice to pressure feed the bearings. Comp Cam's lifters are like that and I used them in my FE.

First 2 days are over, what i did:
- dismantle the block
- found some small debris outside on the #2 and # 5 piston walls
- turn out all restrictors
- throw out all bearings
- cleaned all removed parts and stored them
- check overall for cracks- no cracks
- check all cylinder bores:
+ 2 bores, #2 and #6 had small scratches, must be from some lifter and cam debris carried from the pistons up and down
+ decided not to hone them but to brake the lines.
- on all other bores you can see still the criss cross pattern from the machining 2 years before
- checked all lifter bores, trimmed the sharp edges where the lifter galleys go through,
- honed all lifter bores after trimming the edges
What to order and to replace:
- all rod bearings
- all cam bearings
- main bearings can be kept
This an first overview with all the main parts off:

Not sure which edelbrock you have nor its height. The funnelweb is 6 7/8" (above the rail on the block) and their website is http://parkerracing.com.au/funnelweb.html . They are really good with the cleveland you may want to make contact with them. I think any dual plane (including a modified one) may be to mild for that motor and cam combination. Sounds like you are building a 500hp screamer!

Well, I'll toss in a few suggestions. I run a Cleveland I like to wind up.
Ford's biggest mistake on the Cleveland was the oiling system. Known fact, there are a number of ways to combat it.
Melings ( spell it right when you worder it ) HVHP oil pump is a must.
Tap and install .100 restrictors across the three middle jounals and do the end the same way but with two restrictors. Then align hone the block with the restrictors out.
Do whatever else machine work you are going to do to the block at this time. Make sure the second or third web/journal is not cracked ( this happens ).
Wash it twice and install those restrictors with loc tite.
I would balance the entire rotating assembly.
Install rotating mass into block. I would use ARP studs and nuts.
If you go to 8 qrts, use the Canton road race and their pickup for the oil pump.
Use a billet steel oil pump drive ( the ford ones twist up ).
I would either buy, get or make a set of boss 351 heads with adjustable valve train. Yeah, I know, they breath too much for the street. Hey, do what you want.
Use the Crane gold roller rockers.
Run the Oil balance line from the front of the engine to the rear. There is a port next to the oil filter. Thread a nipple into the port and run a hard line to the rear of the block where the oil pressure sending unit goes. 3/8 Stainless works nice and will help with the oiling problems.
I like the Torqer ( try to spell this one correctly ) intake, it flows okay and doesn't cost a fortune.
I like the 3310 for a carb with a few tuning items.
You should have a smooth running Cleveland that will wind up nicely.

That's the biggest myth hoisted on Ford small block guys since the dawn of the Cleveland head. I think it was dreamed up by the Windsor guys to make their heads seem adequate ! Every time I read that I have to go out and look at my 553hp 372ci Clevor just to make sure that it does indeed have those awful 4V heads. The same head (with minor differences) has been on several Boss 302s that I've owned and they have all screamed. I must admit that cubic inches just makes it better though. Like I always say; if you want a tractor build your engine for low end, if you want it to scream build it for mid range and up! And why would one worry about low end in the land of the Autobahn? I agree with trularin, try some good 4V heads and hang on!
BTW Westcott, thanks for sharing your build up and keep us updated.
Steve

I have the big valve heads on my cleveland and love them. I like the power curve in our type of cars. They would not be my first choice but still a damn good head. With some massaging, a excellent head. Of course, technology has come a long way in 40 years!

Back with some update.
Nothing happend the last few weeks because of lack of parts and time.
But now we are 2 days from final assembly.
What we did:
Monday, June, 16th.
- Replaced the rod bearings with new melling parts. Checked them all out of the box and found 1 pair foulty, spotty surface. Order a new set from the US...
-Installed the oil restrictors again, the new crane solid roller cam, ARP main studs, crank, pistons and timing gear with one rod bearing missing...
-tried to assemble the heads with the new crane double springs and decided to mill all spring seats from original 1.8 to 1.9. Together with new +retainers and +0.05 locks we are going to get 2.0 installed height. Order new retainers and +0.05 locks from the US.....
- Yesterday we milled all the seats. Together with the new locks, hardened shims on bottom and retainers we are about 1.95 all arround with 1/10th of a millimeter difference.
- I checked the oil pump rod(ARP) to dizzy endplay. With the oilpump(without gasket to be on thesafe side, the dimension will be even bigger with it....) and dizzy in place i have 1.5 Millimeters end play measured at the rod, enough.
- Checked the dizzy gear to block clearence, 0.8mm, enough ! Timing cover was off for that work. I replaced the lousy dizzy clamp with a new MSD milled clamp to get the clamp pressure centered on the dizzy shaft. Dizzi will be installed with a 0.3 hardened shim between gear and block as i did last year for safety.
- Checked the fitting(center of the crank) of the brand new Summit 351C timing cover. Correct !
- Painted the block, water pump and timing cover in Ford dark Blue SP-125 !!
The rest of the work will follow on Sunday or next week.
I put some new pictures in my gallery, check them out.
I'll keep you updated,
Uwe
