Default New BOSS based crate motors

Has anyone had any experience with the new BOSS based crate motors by Ford Motorsports ? I thought I saw an indication that they are going to have a 550 hp / 331 cu. in. piece.

Unless the HP figure has been updated, Ford was advertsing it at SEMA as 500 HP. As far as I know, they haven't released them for sale yet.

According to some sources, they are not available yet and the blocks are on back order. Once they get caught up then the engines will get into "production".

Some of the blocks have already been delivered and reports are that they are very good. Over on the Boss 302 registry this has been a very active subject. Even though the crate motors will not have Cleveland type heads they should still be quite potent. To get better info, or pick one up, you can contact Greg (Ohio George Montgomery's son) at (937)233-0353.

ACK, what color is your FIA? Looks like Indigo Blue?? My FIA is a few months from paint, but I am looking at different navy blues. Thanks, Rick from Miami.

Yes it is Indigo Blue. The only downside to Indigo is that is can look too purple in bright sun conditions. It looks great in most other light conditions.
As a side note, Tony painted it and he quoted 6 weeks. It took over 12.

Default Boss Crate Motors

Does anyone know if the 500 hp / 331 cu. in. will be a pump gas motor or will it have lots of compression and require race gas?

I'm not 100% certain, but I've heard 10:1 CR.

Ack FIA. Tony is painting my car as well, so I am 'budgeting' 12 weeks. Where did you get the stamped steel valver covers, they are really sharp. (I am also looking for information on the Boss blocks for a 331). Rick

No, I haven't heard too much about the Boss/Windsor crate motor. A 500hp / 331ci would be a real stretch coming from Ford. Their crate motors are typically very conservative. The “Boss” thing is just advertising hype but ditching the Boss head was a good idea.

ACK. I've been traveling in the Caribbean (Dominican Republic on business). Thanks for the name on the valve covers. They are really cool looking. I like the Boss block, but there has to be a budgetary limit at some point. Mine is coming via putting a main girdle on a 302 block stroked to 331. This should keep everything together. RD

It wasn't a crate motor, but there was a new BOSS block in a crate, at the Columbus show last weekend. $1,650 for the block. Looked like a strong piece.
