				 351 Block Weight ?
Has anyone weighed a factory 351 block with or without main caps? If so, what was the weight? (And is it with or without caps?)
 Thanks,

 Kevin

 Kevin;
I have a 1969, 351-W block laying in the corner of my shop, I'll try and borrow my brother-in-laws scale and weigh it today, I think he has a hanging scale that goes to 500 pounds.......While I'm at it, I'll also weigh the 302 bare block sitting next to it..............

o-k, got the 2 blocks weighed, both are 1969 bare blocks with the main caps attached..........
 302-----------140 pounds

 351-W--------165 pounds

Since these blocks are very dirty, just like I pulled them from the cars, I'd guess another 2 to 5 pounds off those numbers once they were hot tanked and cleaned up.........

Later 351's would add a little as the 69 is a short deck.Larry

 Larry;
Actually the claim is after 1974 the 351-W blocks were changed up some, mostly in the webbing between the crank journals, supposedly they weighed in about 10 pounds less than the 69 thru 74 blocks.........same is supposed to hold true for the 302 blocks.........

Yeah, I think that's true. The 70 and into 74 are tall decks with more webbing material. I have a 70 block that has bosses cast into the webbing for four bolt mains though only two bolts are actually drilled and tapped. Also the webbing is machined flat all the way across the mains instead of rough casting as in later blocks. They are all probably within 10 to 15 lbs of each other and wouldn't matter much in cars like ours.Just for giggles, do you happen to know the weight of a Dart cast iron 351W block?
I always wondered how much difference there is between the Dart and production blocks.

 David,
Thanks! That is help above and beyond.

 Larry,

Dart lists the weight of their iron 351 block at 195 lbs without the caps. So figure just over 200 lbs with them.

I didn't think the Dart block would weigh in that much more than the OEM block, they must have beefed them up quite a bit.........
This fall I'll probably get a Dart or the new Boss 302 block for my race car, right now I'm not far from 500 hp (331 cu in) and with my upgrades on the next race motor should be around 525 to 550 hp.......I don't think an OEM block will hold up to the kind of use/abuse it will get from me............

 David,
Dart lists the iron 302 block at 160 lbs. From what I have seen of them, that will be the best extra 30 lbs, you ever bought.

From what I've seen so far, the Boss block has 4 bolt mains on the three middle caps, the Dart block has them on all the caps, the Boss block is supposed to go on sale at about 500 bucks less than the Dart block............
My next motor will be with one of these two blocks, just have not decided which one, yet............

The Dart block can be had either way. The Iron Eagle version has 4-bolt caps in all 5 positions and the Sportsman is 4-bolt on the center three and 2-bolt on the ends. |

Hi,I hope you don't mine me jumping in on this thread. I have a 289/302/351 question. If I build with a 289 and later want to go with a 302 or 351 what would I be running into ...to do this swap. I'm concerned about the headers matching up... would the motor mounts need to be changed also?
Bell housing...and clutch? I believe the 289 I'm looking at accepts a six bolt bell.

 It's a 289 ERA. tx mike

Early 289 had 5 bolt Bellhousing, later is 6 bolt, same as 351. I believe motor mounts are too. Deck height is taller, headers will fit the heads but will need to be worked on to fit with 351 VS 289/302 due to increased height. Depending on balance factor of engine (289 = 28oz imbalance as OEM) 351 may be different (?) requiring different flywheel.

 Cobra 289 Dudes,
Below is an e-mail of the engine that I'm looking to purchase for $2300.

 Is it woth the price?
What Distributer and Carb do you recommend?
Should I use the HiPo exhaust or make my own headers......?
Has anyone used a 351 cam in a 289? What's should I expect form this?

I have a hold on the engine at this time......

 289 ERA #2115......... tx mike

Some things that jumped out at me.
Early 289 engine had a different bell housing with one less bolt than later years. I would have to pull a book, but you should know the answer to which bell housing this engine takes. The older smaller one limits clutch size, I think. Not sure if a blow proof is available for it.

The 351 cam will interchange, but it is a different firing order than the other SB. I don't see why they thought a 351 cam would make more power. Lift and durration is the key. Never heard it claimed that the 351 fireing order increase scavenging affects and makes more power.

You want to ask if the engine was ballanced with damper and flexplate attached. What offset ballance is this engine?

Bored 0.060 over!!! SB are thin wall castings. I think 0.040 is maximum recommended, again I'd have to pull a book. If I'm right, run. run away as fast as you can! |
