looking for 289 Hi-Po heads

How much should I have in the bank to purchase these heads? Are they readily available? Anyone have a set for sale?

500-1000 + depending on their condition. Unless you are building a "K" motor, save your $$. They offer no performance advantage over standard 289 heads. Valves and ports are the same size. Just mill the rocker arm studs for screw in type and you have essentially the same thing.

But if you have to have them, go to any MCA show or SAAC/Shelby event, check out the vendor row......Last time I was at the Tulsa Shelby event, I saw 6 to 8 pairs of HI-PO heads for sale, some as low as $500.00 per pair..............

And be sure they are real HI-PO heads and not some look-a-likes, make sure they have the "spring pockets" or else they are fakes.......

Below is an e-mail of the engine that I'm looking to purchase for $2300.

Is it woth the price?
What Distributer and Carb do you recommend?
Should I use the HiPo exhaust or make my own headers......?
Has anyone used a 351 cam in a 289? What's should I expect form this?

you've stated in the specs that it is bored 60 over? this is a big no no!! 40 over on these engines is pushing the limit...........but hey what ever floats your boat

FWIW- I had a 289 bored .060" in my 68 GT-350 and ran it 20,000 miles no problems. Everyone warned me about overheating, but it always ran right on the 180 degree thermostat. I believe it is still in the car today and this goes back over 29 years.

Overbores of .060 are usually the limit. The reason that .040 is recommended as the limit is that if there is a core shift during production, going beyond that weakens the walls. If the engine was sonic tested and bored properly, it is probably fine. YMMV.

Thanks for the 289 .060 feedback. The motor has a warrenty of 4 mos 4K so I'll probably chance it. mike

Warrenty to the second purchaser? The 4 months don't start until the second purchaser gets the engine? If you haven't done so, you need to talk directly to the builder who is standing behind this warrenty.

Personally I wouldn't trust a 0.060 overbore. It's your roll of the dice though, and life is a gamble. I prefere low risk gambling unless the pay off is big. I don't see the big pay off here. Maybe I missed it, but I didn't see any parts that make this a steal, if the block ends up as toast.

I have never bored a small block 0.060. Any pro builder will tell you that.

I have a 67 289, .060 over that I have run hard and as a daily driver with well over 80000 km. Never had an issue with it. I just freshened it up with a new set of rings, bearings, and bolts and it is nice and tight. It is the strongest small block with stock rods and crank I have had over the years.

Now I would bore it to .060 over from stock, but really only to increase the number of times you can rebuild it in the future.
