I would just replace the cap and not worry about it.

Make sure the rotor is making good contact with it when you put the cap on. If not, it will burn up.

If you are referring the the small diameter billet distributor you can get a better one from NAPA with brass terminals. KEM (another ignition product maker)also make one. Ask for one for International Harvester V8.

Dump the MSD cap...I went through 3 of them before going with a NAPA...like Rick said get one for a IH V-8...most NAPA stores have them in stock. Less expensive than the MSD cap also.

Son of a Gun! This same thing happened to me today. Took the dizzy out to fix the leak (didn't put an O-ring under the factory ring...used hi temp black electrical tape cut thin to fit in the land of the MSD ring to push out the factory O-ring and installed like this \_______/). Started it up and put the timing light on it and started to turn the dist and it quit!! Ground the batteries dead, then took it all apart again and noticed the coil carbon was flat inside the cap!!! So I'll wax it this weekend, and tune it next weekend. Had to order the part. I'll try the NAPA one next. Thanks for the hint.
