Default Cam for a Weber inducted 331

I see lots of references on this board about using a cam that is "Weber friendly". However, when looking through the Comp Cams catalog, I see lots of applications, but not one of them says anything about using an IR manifold and Weber carbs. I would like to use a solid roller, and the compression will be at 10.2 to 1. Also using Edel Vic Jr heads. Any input will be appreciated. John

Default Cams for Webers

I had a cam custom-ground for my engine by Cam Techniques in FL ( 941-351-4994). They were recommended to me by Inglese. They ground a "Weber-friendly" solid-lifter cam for my 351C.

I am very happy with the results. The cam I originally had in the engine was a very lumpy Lunati, which sounded just great, but didn't "come-alive" 'til sometime past 4,000 rpm. The Cam Techniques camshaft is very tractable around town, and will pull strongly from idle to 7,500+ rpm.

With today's oils you need to consider a hydraulic roller cam.

I agree with Tom, a hydraulic roller will solve many problems with reliability and ease of care. Low overlap cam is a must with Webers, they do not tolerate both valves being open at the same time at all secondary to their short runners and will blow fuel out the stacks or worse.

The reason I'm thinking about getting a mechanical roller is that it will rev much higher than a hydraulic roller. Hyd rollers lifters don't work very well with seat pressures much over 130lbs. And if the cam needs less overlap to be compatible with an IR manifold and carbs, the cam will need about .600 lift to flow well and produce power at 6800 to 7000 RPM. This will be a 0 balanced Dart or Ford Boss block, with a 3.25 stroke, and a 4 plus .030 or .060 bore. I want to use a 2.05 intake valve and the larger bore works well with keeping the valve away from the cylinder wall. John

My engine componets, including the cam, were spec'd by Gordon Levy. It's a 331 with Scat forged internals, 10.2:1 compression, Victor Jr heads (60cc chambers, 2.05/1.60 valves), Comp Cams hydraulic roller (.598/.598 lift, 232/232 deg dur @ .050), and Weber 48IDA induction.

Gordon says this engine should make 450+ HP.
