Almost anything will be an improvement over what you have.
Cast iron heads can be had for a pretty reasonable price from a variety of places. If you go with alum, you can probably raise the compression a bit.
I've used Edelbrock parts on a few projects over the years, and they are good bang for the buck.
AFR makes good power. But some of the pro builders (like Gordon Levy) have reported some quality control issues over the years.
I'm currently using a set of Dart Pro-1 alum heads. They are priced well, and work good out of the box. They make over 500hp on my 427 stroker. The exhaust port is raised 1/8", so you'll have to look at your set up to see if the fit. On my FFR, there's no clearance issues at all.
