Use a plastic putty knife or you will scratch the aluminium center on the steering wheel. Do not use a screwdriver!!!!!!!The best way is to get you some 15lb fishing line and wrap around the center cap once it slides under just pop it off.

I would also like to know the answer to your question, can we just use the insert or do we need the whole cap, does anyone know.

From another post on here I ended up using the plastic tools made for bicycle tire removal which worked well and leave no scratches.

I think I was trying to find the difference between the $60 cap vs the $30 insert.

I just bought the complete "Cobra" center cap assembly from Finish Line. I don't think the cheaper insert will work with the original Superformance center cap as it doesn't look like it comes apart.

When I tried to mount the new center cap I had a bit of trouble getting it to mount flush with the aluminum wheel center spoke area. The O ring was hanging it up ever so slightly. A quick dab of dielectric on the O ring allowed it to slip on and in tightly and securely, fitting completely flush up against the hub area.

You do need to buy the whole cap. Definitely use the fishing line trick or a teflon "Bone" tool to pry it off. I went with the black cobra cap and it looks great and top notch quality. I did have to make a run to the hardware for a new o-oring as mine was a little loose when installed.

On another note - purchased the leather wrapped steering wheel from Finishline (the replica not the moto-lita). Great price...but the finish is unpolished. It was a winter project last year to sand and polish...i think it took me 10 hours to sand with progressively finer grit then polish with a wheel. Looks beautiful...but now I know why Kirkham charges what they do to brush or polish the bodies as an option.
