Ed,
I did the same with using bolt/nut "couplers" (instead of welding) from Home Depot/Ace Hardware store and a 1" chrome drain pipe as the cover/extension.
Lots of stores sell RayDots. couldn't use the Broadway Wide mirror - too much vibration. Maybe I should bet a smaller motor?
