Default Best way to fill your cooling system and bleed the air / spark plug tip - 351W

I have found when filling my cooling system the best way to fill and ensure no air is trapped is to loosen the temp sending unit on the intake manifold a couple threads. I have the smith style sending unit so make sure you hold the sending unit from turning when you loosen the big 19 mm nut. If you completely remove it may overflow and then you have a mess to clean up. If you just back out a 4 or 5 threads at worse a couple drops drip out and you just wipe it up. This ensures the cooling system is completely full with no air.

I have done this numerous times. It is so much better than filling, waiting for the thermostat to open, filling, blah blah blah.

Another tip, if you are removing spark plugs and hear a pop, it means you broke the ceramic. Replace immediately. Even if you dont see a crack it is there. You will then spend weeks chasing a exhaust pop, erratic running and convincing yourself it is something it isn't. You may ask how do you break one, simple use a pos craftsman spark plug socket that is a little to big for the afr head. Instead go buy a Matco and be done.

Another tip, if you are removing the intake manifold, drain the cooling system, then remove the temp sending unit. Then use compressed air to blow the manifold empty through the radiator. make sure you leave the drain plug out of the radiator so it will drain. If not you will pressurize the system and be cleaning anti freeze off the ceiling.

When you pull the intake off, no antifreeze will get into the crankcase.

A U-joint on your spark plug socket will also help a great deal in preventing broken spark plugs. Better yet by a spark plug socket with an attached u-joint and your friend wont break your plugs either.

I agree and I doubt the correct wrench cost $375, which is what I spent troubleshooting until I found the bad plug

I've seen people put a petc ock in an empty intake manifold hole to accomplish the same thing. I put a 1/8" hole in the thermostat - never had any problem burping the system.

I also put petc ocks in in the block drain holes - right front and left rear. Makes it easy to drain the block without making a mess. I like the compressed air idea, I'll do that next time.

Be careful with AAPL. It's had a pretty good run already.

Blasfamy will not be tolerated!! With 45 billion in cash reserves and zero debt Apple appears to be stable. The risk is Steve Jobs falling ill etc. I got it over a year ago so I am in pretty good shape. I have many other investmenst and while they stay flar or fall in price Apple Marchs up. I think it is safe to $400.

I also doubt Apple can run into environmental problems like BP, or union problems like GM / Ford or bare bones competion like Walmart. The Ipad is there first real attempt to break into the corporate workplace. If they can do that we will be looking at a long healthy run for Apple. Shows you how screwed up society is, people place a higher value on cell phones and MP3 players than the basic building blocks like food and clothes and transportation.

Just go back and edit the post. You're probably right about Apple. I got in at 101 and out at 249 (too soon). What is it Cramer says - Bulls make money, bears make money, but pigs get slaughtered. I also have the hole in the thermostat.

OK, getting back to the original post, why not just use a Stant LEV-R-VENT radiator cap at the highest point in the system? Carefully lifting the lever while the system is hot occasionally will bleed air from the system without making a big mess.

Even when you open it safely with the radiator cap you still have to wait for the coolant to cool down in an attempt to burb the air so you can fill more. The way I propose is you fill the system and it ensures no air, you fill it once and you are done, no going back and topping off. Only fill to about 1 inch above the divider plate in overflow tank or it will burp some off.
