Default Polyurathane engine mounts

I've seen where the stock rubber mounts allow the engine to move around enough for the headers to hit the body and the poly mounts solves this. I'm planning on a 351W based engine (getting close to ordering car and, if new, the engine, etc.). Anyone tried these? How is the vibration insulation to the frame? I had a 240Z once that I changed the stock rubber sway-bar, etc. bushings to poly and they really transmitted road shock to the car.

Forget the quatetion (should have read more threads). Looks like poly is the only way to go.

Voss Performance which has done numerous 427 Roush installs in Superformance and who, by the way comes highly recommended by Lance Standler, one of the owners of Superformance, uses rubber mounts that cost all of about $50 on their web site. I know, I know everyone swears that if you don't use rock solid, Kryptonite/Steel/Polyurathane mounts that vibrate your car to pieces (and cost 5 times as much) that your side pipes are going to hit the body but frankly I think that is a bunch of BS unless you drag race your car all day and do 7,000 rpm clutch drops and otherwise intentionally abuse your Cobra.

Why else would the foremost installer of big inch engines in Superformance use rubber mounts? Think about. They charge mega bucks to make turn key Superformance cars for big rollers with large cash rolls and little mechanical skills. If they thought that they were gonna get a bunch of warranty claims back due to to bad motor mounts that caused body damage due to side pipe movement would they use rubber motor mounts? No way.

I have the Olthoff Poly mounts and they are worth every penny. My pipes dont move. Seen the rubber ones crack after 500 miles. My rubber stock transmission mount cracked after 100. I switched to the Poly Trans mount sold by Cobra Valley and it will probably last the life of the car.

My rubber mounts did allow the side pipes to hit the body. I changed to the Polyurathane mounts and they work fine. In fact I don't believe they transmit any more vibration than the rubber mounts did.

Sounds like you fall into this category. An engine with a fair amount of torque, which a lot have on this forum, will rip a set of rubber mounts apart in no time. Tranny mounts included. Higher amounts will also fatigue poly mounts in couple of years. If you're running high horse and torque, it's best to check your mounts a couple times a year, and replace after a few years.

I changed to poly engine mounts after the sidepipe mounts broke a couple of times. Dennis Olthoff had suggested the switch to poly after I called for a solution to the sidepipe issue. I never had problems with the pipes hitting the body panel. One of the rubber engine mounts was cracked when I took them off. I never had the problem in the SPF with the 351 I previously had. It's the monster torque of the 460 and other big block installations that I think Superformance didn't anticipate in designing the engine mounts.
I do feel a little bit more vibration transmitted to my seat but that's OK.

I have a 460. The car had rubber mounts, and a big chunk out of the drivers side exhaust exit through the body when I bought it. It was nasty. I bought the poly mounts from someone on SCOF and it solved the problem. I had to do some grinding to get them to fit, but it was easy enough and I honestly can't tell the difference regarding vibration.

How to fix that chunk is another story..

I was looking at SPF 2404 to buy and I saw a short chain bolted to the frame and the engine. There was a little slack to allow for a small amount of movement. I assumed it was to protect against too much movement if the engine mounts broke. Seems like cheap insurance if it would hold. Anyone know much about that set up?

The short chain is a throw back to the old days, before engine plates and poly mounts. that's what racers used to keep from ripping motor mounts apart.

What is an engine plate? Since you call it a throw back are you suggesting they did not work well? I understand if you have poly mounts you don't need the chains, but if you had original rubber mounts, would the chains be a reasonable add-on? Oh, maybe you are saying if you are worried about your motor mounts, don't mess with the chains and use poly? Thx

An engine plate mounts on the front of the engine and bolts to the frame. They eliminate motor mounts.





Not suggesting they didn't work, it's just the natural evolution of racing. Drum brakes served their purpose, but not there are discs, and who knows what will come next.

As far as mounts, I'd say with your motor, poly would be a wise choice, and should give you years of wear. In my case, I can rip a set of stock mounts in a day, and poly last about 2 years max.

I wrapped heavy chain around my left mount so that is can not lift and tear. But there is still room for wiggle and a vibration free ride because of the slight amount of slack in the chain. As mentioned, it is an old idea, but works incredibly well and gives you the best of both worlds.

You can use turn buckles in place of chain also.

There are some mounts out there that are rubber, by good suppliers that are ok. These days it is hit and miss unless you can guarantee where it came from. My suggestion based on the install I am completeing is spend the money and use the Olhtoff mount. It mounts like butter with a Roush/Dart block and is a good height.

Who makes a good poly engine and trans mounts for a 460 Ford and tremec tko 500 Hope theres more then one.

Craig Aylsworth over on SCOF makes the poly mounts and adaptors for 460's/514's etc. Check it out;

I bought mine from him, and he even did the install. Of course he live not to far from me. I haven't had issues since. I believe the poly trans mount can be perchased from Performance Unlimited for the Tremec TKO's. When I yank out my trans and rear for overhaul/upgrade, I will upgrade to the poly trans mount.
