Default Roush 427R service recall.

Just had my Roush engine in for the service recall. They replaced the springs and bushing in the distributor. Technician mentioned that performance might be diminished. I noticed no seat of the pants difference. Anyone else care to comment?

They obviously retarded the timing. Must have experienced detonation in some cars that caused engine damage.

Cobra Ed, you're right. They put a reminder in the notice to only use premium fuel. Luckily all the local stations around me have 93 octane. I'm impressed that Roush took the trouble to send out the notice and footed the bill ( up to $100). I doubt that I would have experienced any problems, but to keep the warranty, I had the work done

It sounds like people are running pump gas and messing up pistons. Some states have 95 unleaded right at the station, but the basic super unleaded pump gas available here in Scottsdale, Arizona is oxygenated 91. You can't run the car properly on the stuff. Just a guess, but the MSD ignition is adjusted with springs and the recall is backing off timing. I always run either 100 octane unleaded or mixed pump 91 with 110 leaded or higher. You couldn't pay me to make the car slower for convenience of using cheap gas. Just my opinion.

FYI, I was running a 50/50 mix of F&L 111 and 91 octane in my Roush 434 (very similar to the 427) and it did not run well. The motor has 10.25 compression and had a problem on the top end. It would not run to the limiter on extended high rpm runs and it felt like either a fuel or ignition problem.

I took the car to a local mechanic who builds motors and does a lot of SPF motor installs who also works closely with Roush. He spoke with Eric at Roush who said he thought it was a problem of running fuel that was to high in octane which burns to slow for a low compression motor. Sure enough after getting rid of the race fuel and running some pump 91 octane fuel through the car the problem went away. I was worried about detonation with the pump gas, but It turns out I was creating a problem with using the race fuel.
