On the Kirkham, it's mounted on the square diagonal down tube behind the driver seat, as high as possible.
On the Shelby, the down tubes are round..., so I mounted high on the right wall, just rear of the fuel pumps.
You can wing it a bit, just make it secure and high, but the lid accessible.
