Default Front License Plate Holder

Does anyone know if there is a requirement for us to have a front license plate in Texas? Does it depend on the year of the car? Is there an inspection issue that I should be aware of?

Thanks!

A Texas safety inspection does not require a front plate, but it is the law in Texas that all cars run front plates, no exceptions. There is legislation underway in Austin to do away with the front plate but its hasn't passed yet. I have been running without a front plate for 2 years and have not had even a glance, whereas on my street car I have been pulled over three times and ticketed once. The DPS/State Troopers are more stringent than local police, in my experience.

The decision is yours.

So plate, stickefar T-1000 has not stopped me...but then again he did not give me a ticket when I was go-karting around the hood. I think if you run vintage plates you don't have to run front r on windshield,or inspection sticker. The Alpine Cobra guys run vintage plates and nothing else. I believe you are limited to club meeting or car events.

About Antique plates:
Antique Vehicle

Classic plates:

Classic Auto

You will have a very hard time getting a local tag office to issue either tag for a replica Cobra these days. They are all on a campaign to stop the use of these tags on cars that aren't classics or antiques by the State's definition. What you can do however is find an original 1965 or 1966 plate and run it, because Texas used to stamp the year on the plate for the year it was issued and they don't care if you run one of those, as long as it isn't registered to any other car.

I've never seen a front plate on one of our DFW Cobras. As has been said, the law requires it, but is largely ignored. Inspection does not check how many plates, just that you have current insurance. Make sure your insurance card refers to your car as a 1965 or 1966 Ford Cobra Replica. If your title from out of state says something else, go with that, but get a comment on there about the 1965 Ford Cobra Replica. That is what gets you waived from having to pass emissions testing.

Technically, cars like ours are supposed to be inspected at a DPS Waiver Site (check Texas Department of Public Safety - Vehicle Inspection Offices Statewide). But many quick oil change places don't know this and inspect them anyway. You will need the inspection certificate when you apply for your TX title and registration. Good luck!

Got the inspection done this morning. Had Joe Wicked fix the short in the front headlights and then inspection guy didnt even turn them on. Think he liked my wussy horn to much. Oh well at least night driving is in my future and 1/2 of getting the car transferred to TX is done. I think I will run the risk of no front plate holder for now and focus my attention on some of the cars other issues.
