Default Wheel Color

Love the wheels....that aged magnesium patina. Could you share some details on how you got there? Is it a specialty coating, or did you just try 50 shades of gray....gray paint that is.....until you found one that you like? Is it an off-the-shelf color, or a custom mix? Any details would be appreciated.

As far the wheels go here is a response I gave back in early 2013.

John I used your approach with paint as I really liked the wheels on your Kirkham, but wasn't sure how that would work, so a friend of mine had a bent Cobra wheel and I started experimenting on it with primer and paint. Sanded the wheels with 220 and then I started with a Rustoleum light green etching primer, added some gray primer and then flat black paint. The key to the look is with the green still tacky then dusting the gray and flat black and start rubbing with black mechanic's gloves on, to get the vintage look. Even the spokes looked really old. Sometime the paint would smudge or get rough which made it look even better. I took me about 3-4 hours per wheel but was worth it as I really wanted an old magnesium look and they came out just as I wanted. Then never clean them just let the dust pile up on them.
