Yep the 0.83 would be good for cruising and the improved 2.87 first gear.

About the syncros being a weak point I dont know that for sure but feedback on this forum appears that they are. I will either be shooting for a Jerico or a Toploader, in fact I dont want syncros at all so that makes the question easy!
