I bet it is just Pepe's way of protesting the lack of track time.

how about thrust, torque, ball joints, rods, hoses, valves, expansion tanks, sleeves, pistons, compression, pressure.....
it's all about making something fit inside something else, isn't it?? That's why guys are such gearheads???

Kirsten, I don't know if you have a roller camshaft, if so, they sometimes (often!) eat the distributor gear. Grinding down the teeth on the gear to a razor edge, breaking them even.

This post should have a XXX rating

The distributor gear has roll pin, make sure it is not sheared.

Okay, I did not say ANYTHING to emote a sizzling response like that.
And, of course, right after that Excalibur talks about the teeth grinding down. Talk about OUCH!

During high school and again during college, I took an auto repair class. Of course, that was before video killed the radio star and computers took over engines. Not sure what that class would look like now but might be worth looking into, if you're serious.

I don't care anymore. don't care!!!!

roller camshaft?? I don't know!!
distributor gear?? I don't know!!
I am too busy with things in life right now; it just doesn't matter. I'll get the car next week or whenever. I'm sure it'll be fixed satisfactorily.

Drove the '65 stang yesterday; too windy and chilly today. Maybe tomorrow it'll be nice. Special plans for the 500, I think.

Poor Pepe.

thanks for the replies! keep trying!

hey, Miles.... I thought it was just too tempting to resist.

we seem to have a special 'bond' (i think in a different lifetime... well nevermind, rosanne rosanna danna would say

yeah, I'm serious about the automotive repair, somewhat. I think taking something at a junior college tho' would be a 'modern' repair class. Not what I'm looking for. I need auto repair for '60's vintage. Not likely to find that easily.

Interesting point HLC, a nieghbor friend of mine (young man, high school) is taking an auto shop class and he asks me questions, brings over his book, helps me work on the car, etc.

Whew, they jumped right into fuel injection, computers, antilock brakes, digital this and that. I'm thinking it's a shame they didn't start with some fundamentals! "This is a piston."

He helped set the POINTS on the Austin Healey and was fascinated they were a 'mechanical switch' instead of electronic.

A blonde pushes her Cobra into Keith Craft Motorsports. She tells the mechanic it died.
After he works on it for a few minutes, it is idling smoothly.
She says, "What's the story?"
He replies, "Just crap in the carburetor"
She asks, "How often do I have to do that?"

That's my story and I'm sticking with it.

Fred,

I just knew that somehow this would wind up involving Kristen. Kristen, you need to go to a NASCAR school as they teach naturally aspirated engines and the basics.

Kristen,

Any word on Pepe's ailments yet? We're into November already.

I thought I was going to take my Cobra for a ride today but starting
last night we got 3 months worth of rain. Time to get the roof
reshingled!

Fred Fred Fred. And you wonder why i am always shaking my head.......
thank GOD i am not that blonde anymore.

well Flip.....
i picked it up a couple of weeks ago, and it did the SAME THING on the way home from the shop.
Fortunately David was following me home in his truck, and in the MIDDLE OF THE INTERSECTION where it died he could run back to me and PUSH the car to a corner of a very questionable neighborhood where i stood and waited and watched two men come up to the car and i thought they might just try to steal it and i guess i'd just watch them steal it rather than die protecting it with nothing.... so David arrived with the truck/trailer in tow and i loaded the precious thing right back in and took it back to Rob....
welllllll a few days later it was 'all fixed' with an 'ignition module' i happened to have that Gary had given me when i bought the car and SUPPOSEDLY that fixed it.... but what about that carb??? and..... 'they' drove it around for 45 minutes +- and well it didn't die... but... i went back up there with the truck/trailer on Thursday to retrieve it as i wasn't going to AGAIN be stranded and especially as there are two major highways i must traverse to get to shop.... and so i unloaded it Thursday and pulled it in the garage and there he sits..... waiting for me to find the time to drive it around MY NEIGHBORHOOD for a GOOD LONG WHILE while i 'test drive' it and see if it dies...... i have lost a bit of confidence thinking it might be fixed and don't consider it 'road worthy' for a long cruise with the Dallas group etc. until i am certain i won't AGAIN be left stranded. hmmmmmmmmmmmmm

carb???? hmmmmmm ignition module? hmmmmmmm
not sure.
Rob has been at SEMA all week and won't be back at the shop til tomorrow or Tuesday. He has a lot on his plate tho' and i'm not sure i want to deal with the Cobra right this minute or that HE wants to deal with MY Cobra right this minute.
That's where i am. Pepe stuck in the garage because i'm too busy right now.

thanks for asking.

Well, at least you're not too busy for US!
Thanks for the update. Hope he's back on the road soon.

Kristen,

Sounds like you may be making some progress. I know our cars are not
at all alike but: I had a similar problem a couple of years ago. Seems
everything would be fine, then it would shut down as if you had turned the
key off. No start, no nothing for about 15 minutes, then start right up and
everything would be fine. Long story short (this went on for a few months)
I got stuck at a stop sign waiting in the car in front to finally go and in about a half mile it shut down again (hot). Got a small towel, put cold water on it and put it on what I guess is some form of computer module on the firewall and it started right up. Replaced the module and no more problems. Drove me nuts for a while. The "module" for lack of a better name, was an aluminum box about 1 1/2" thick and 4" x 5" from a mustang that was incorporated into the wiring - maybe to the coil. Not really sure what it did other than when it got hot it shut it down. Don't know if you have something similar in yours but if you do you may want to check it out. My "module" cost about $75.
Good luck on solving it - and I know what you mean by staying close to
home until you regain your confidense in it.

I'm convinced that its the curse of the pink thong. Hope the module change fixed the problem. If you need a test driver, I'll fly down and help you drive all the toys ... every day. But I'll have to finish my vacation first, before I go on a second vacation.

Kristen,

Don't let Warren drive Pepe. The stopping after it gets hot sounds more electronic than carburetion. Do you have the MSD 6-AL ignition in it? You could have a module or even a wire that after all this time is close enough to some heat source that it is going bad until it cools off. I would give you a long technical explanation of how to check for this but I don 't know how.
