Blown Head gasket (I think) - KCR408
I just took the car out for a spin today and when everything was cooled down I was checking some of the fluids and noticed oil in the radiator:CRY:
My assumption is this is a blown head gasket... but any other things it could be?
I left a message for Rob at KCR to see if he can get it quickly replaced...hope I can get this done in time for Austin :(
Also a quick question for the group... my oil pressure is running a bit over 25, seems low. Think I should have KC install a high flow pump also? (it has always been at this level)
Thanks

Wow, Chris, 25 seems really low.
Mine's around 50 cold and 35 hot.
Oil in the coolant, not sure what else it could be.
If their schedule allows, should be do-able before Austin.
Keep us up to date - if their schedule doesn't allow, we can pull together a group and do this ourselves.

25 PSI is way to low an OP for any RPM other than idle.
Give some background/history about the engine, existing info is too vague to offer any constructive info.

Has it always been 25 lbs?

Rob was stuck under a 57 chevy all day and when I left at 6:20 after dropping some things off for my 500 he said he had another 6 hours under it..Apparently the owner has a car gathering he wants it in tomorrow.
I'm going by there tomorrow to pick up my satellite and put it out at the new house so I will check with him then Chris. If you have oil in the coolant you either have a head gasket or an intake gasket(this would be better). When you say you are running 25psi pressure is that at idle or under load?

Oil Pressure
The oil pressure is always 25 lbs... well maybe when it starts it is a bit higher (30 ish) but it does not move much underload if any at all.
I did buy a new pick up thinking that it could be messed up... but I was thinking about it last night... I need to find the scale the pickup outputs and can then measure with a DMM to determine if it is working somewhat correctly
It has always been at 25...from the first day I fired it up. If I recall when I asked Keith about it he said it should be fine

Chris:
Pull all the plugs and do a compression check. That should tell you if the gasket is blown. Second, look for a high volume rather than a high pressure pump. Pressure does strikes me as a bit low if it's 25 psi over 2000 rpm but an engine with clearances built it will run at a lower pressure in favor of higher flow.

since there is oil in the radiator but not coolant in the oil... could this be any other problem?

More likely an intake gasket imo, 25psi over 3000 rpm is not good,10 psi per 1000 rpm??

If it has always been only 25 psi it could be a restriction somewhere that has now caused a crack or a leak of oil into the coolant. There is really nowhere in the engine that the oil should mix in the coolant even with a blown gasket.A head gasket would put coolant in the oil, not oil in the coolant. Very curious!!!??

well I am going to do a compression check this afternoon... but it seems like it is the intake maybe the problem... hope I don't have a larger issue.
I may also try and find a oil pressure tester to determine if my gauge or sender are bad... I have always thought it was low... but this motor does not even have 3k miles on it %/
back to the shop I go

What weight oil are you running? where is your oil PSI gauge located on tne engine? what is the P?SI at start-up?

i had the same problem with my engine on the cobra i bought, maybe its a jbl thing. :D get a leakdown tester and check your cylinders. that'll tell you real quick. on the pressure thing 25 at idle won't hurt, you just want more when the rpm's pick up.

It is 20W-50...as for where it is located... I think the normal pickup location??

I just finished my compression test and all of the cylinders are between 150-140 so it does not appear to be a head gasket problem

Just a quick thought. Do you have an automatic transmission with a cooler in the radiator?

that was with a leakdown tester? cause sometimes turning the motor over with compression tester won't show it.

no... I think I would be shot for having an automatic on a cobra :3DSMILE:
