Motor Pull and Fajita's
All,
Well it is official the KCM has to be extracted and rebuilt. I spoke with Keith at the Austin event and there cannot be any other problems besides a cracked block. (other than the oil to water flapper valve that Matt thought could be the problem) Keith agreed since it is such low miles and it may have had the problem all along he would rebuild it. He indicated this has happen maybe one other time.
So… now I have very little experience pulling motor’s…ok none.
Anyone want to offer both technical and moral support say Saturday around 11 am in Flower Mound?
My donation to the cause: The best Fajita’s you ever had, plus some cerveza of course.
Let me know if anyone is available. My plan is to remove as much as the supporting accessories before Saturday as I can, so with luck this will be a quick extraction
Thanks

This sounds like a job for the "T.I.T.".
Can you wait for another week? The monthly meet is this Saturday and numerous souls are busy or worn out from last weekend. I'm heading to Hallett to verify the track is ready for Mid-America.
Anyway, Micheal at KCM in Plano said they will not be transporting engines back east for a couple of weeks anyway. (I had the same discussion, too). Give them a call to verify.

I think Kristen has a great idea...Is there someone to eat close to your house Chris? We can just jump over and pull that bad boy after lunch. And I still think the oil to water flapper valve is stuck...oh and I noticed your blinker fluid looked a little low

Combine with April Meet
Chris, I plan to attend the April meet. I like Kristen's suggestion also. We can eat at a nearby restaurant, most people can head home after, then the T. I. T. can go over to your house and get 'er dun. Or, I can show up the following weekend if that works better. See how many commitments you get.
If you want us to come help, we need to know what equipment you have on hand and what to bring. For instance, engine hoist, FE specific engine cradle, a good ball bearing engine tilter and chains. Or a carb plate to lift with (if you are not goosey about that). You'll need assorted 3/8 (?) bolts to attach the chains to the heads. I assume you have plenty of wrenches.
How much of this stuff you have determines whether we drive our Cobras to the meet or our trucks.
You will probably need your Cobra in a position in the garage where we can get the hoist in from the side by removing a wheel. Most of these hobby quality hoists do not have the reach to come over the nose. Have to see what people offer up.

Well, Matt, I like the way you're thinking. Definitely a job for the T.I.T. Best double entendre slip up in 2 months around here.
Unfortunately (for you) I'll be in Maui on Saturday. And Sunday. And Monday. And, hell, for the next 8 days.
Sorry to brag but the first "real" vacation since our wedding in St. Lucia 3+ years ago.
Chris, let me know if there's any tools you can think you need before Thur 10pm and I'm happy to loan if I have them.

Chris,
If you take loose the wiring, hoses, fuel line, throttle body linkage, take headers loose etc. we can likely pull that thing in less than an hour. Do you have an engine stand for an SBF? You will need one.

I've got a really really really big hammer that I use for projects like this, along with a plasma cutter.
There's a baby shower at my house on Saturday (and NO it's not for my wife), so I'll be kicked out of the house. I'm in for the enginectomy.

updated plans
All,
So…we see my continued ability to space stuff out. Guess we need a slight change of plans.
Update:
Normal Monthly get together – Razzoo's, Hooters or OTB. All of the restaurants are at the corner of 35E and Corporate in Lewisville. Stacey voted for hooters since the wings on Saturday were not the hot ones she likes (Bentley) any votes/preferences?
Engine Pull – 1 pm (after lunch) at the Nolands (about 3 miles down corporate at the corner of Garden Ridge and Corporate)
As for equipment… I am working on getting some stuff before then so hopefully no one needs to bring anything.
Does any one know where you can get the engine stands Keith typically uses? They are really low to the ground and transport nicely. Regular stands don’t fit into van’s very easily for transport

Good luck. I'll be thinking of you while "shooting the B!tch" at Hallett. (Did I say that right Kristen?)

Engine Stand
Sorry, thought you had an FE. I have a generic Northern Tool engine stand that you can have if you can't find a specific SBF one. We can probably make it work. Just let me know if you want me to bring it Also, you might give Michael a call and see if they have one over at KCM to loan. I could pick it up for you, as I go by there on the way home from work.
No preference on the restaurant .. best Cobra parking scenario would rule.

Looks like I won't make it this weekend to the lunch or pull. Looks like I will be at TMS for the races.

Dang it!!
Chris,
Mary & I have to go back to Austin this weekend-leaving Friday & returning on Sunday. It is parents weekend for John jr's fraternity & we have been booked for a month.
I really wish I could be there, but I think the cracked block was caused by the bad attitude of the three assistant managers at the Marriott....but I won't tell Keith Craft :-)..oh, it is 4/1/08 today..............
I'll be there in spirit, my friend,
John Russell

fun with engines
Miles,
Have fun in Maui...
As for tools I don't think I need any. the only thing I am trying to find is an engine stand. Rob does not have any of the transport stands Keith uses... so I might have to build a quick stand and just put it in the back of my car if I am going to bring it to his shop on monday
Maybe the better question is what do I need to have on hand... and I can then check if I have it
Also I called OTB and booked it for us on Saturday

Needed equipment
Chris, do you have an engine hoist with chains and either a tilter or a carb plate to attach the hoist to the engine? That's the biggie. We can bring these things if you do not have them, although the hoist is a real pig to haul.
Also need at least two jack stands to suspend your car while we take a wheel off so the hoist can roll under the body. A floor jack is needed to put the car up on stands.
Then you will need a socket set and some box wrenches in SAE sizes.
That's about it for a pull. Don't know how the tranny is in your car. Do we need to remove it? Does it go in through the cockpit or from under the car? I have a tranny jack if needed. Also let me know if you want the generic engine cradle I have. We might have to cut some angle or something to make it adapt, but maybe not. If jdean brings his welder we can modify it if necessary. I do not care if we booger it up, I don't need it.
