Smile Vintage Racing

I'm adding another car to the stable to go vintage racing with luv da blues. I attended a few of the vintage events over the last couple of years and the "bug" I thought that I buried in 2004 has risen. Some of you wanted to know what kind of a car I'll be racing, so I thought I post a pic. of what mine will look like.

My crew chief, who is sporting a new bling ring as a fair exchange for the above purchase, has me on Weight Watchers (no Dewars) so I can get down to jockey weight and fit into this machine.

See you at the next Coffee and Cars Aug.29th if not sooner.

Just a note,

Larry and I are both scrambling to sort cars, trailers and health (well my health) issues out to make a RMVR event in Hastings, Nebraska Labor Day weekend. Larry is to receive his car this week or next, then run a full day at ECR w/o any major problems. I'm doing the same with a bunch of new parts on the Mustang. (Also adding a bunch of cool stuff to the trailer) We don't want to travel 620 miles just to work on our cars and watch everybody have all the fun.

BTW Larry, what kind of HP does that little go-cart engine have?

The Merlyn was built by Colchester Racing Development, Ltd. back in the '60's. They are still in business today and operate as a British Tool and Machine Co. and the best part is that they still can manufacture the parts for the Merlyn Formula Fords and the other models they originally produced.

The FF Mk 20A was built in 1971. CRD built about 450 of these cars from mid 1960's to 1972 and about 250 were shipped to the U.S. This car has a 1600cc cross flow Kent Ford engine with weber carbs and a 4 speed Hewland tranny with an operational reverse.
It developes about 105 HP and will top out in a good draft and tail wind around 130MPH. Disc brakes and coil overs on each corner, with upper and lower A arms. Very responsive and fun to drive.

This car qualifies for The Monoposto Racing Club events in addition to the various vintage racing clubs accross the country...CVAR, RMVR, SVRA, etc. Check out the MRC at http://www.monoposto.com/index.html, for more info.

db, These clubs won't let one add HP so Weight Watchers is the only way I know of on improving the power to weight ratio.

These guys have way too much fun! Remember, life is not a "dress rehersal"!

If that is the track I am thinking of (how many are in Hastings Nebraska), George Anderson took me for a few laps on it. It was a ton of fun.

David, Motorsports Park is the place and I understand Geroge Anderson, the owner, is a great guy and the facility is terrific. Their web site http://www.racemph.com/ allows one to take some hot laps with George in a GT 500.

Somewhere I've heard a comparision between racing and sex! Now how does that go????

is this
  • dangerous and frequently out of service
  • hard to start and has a tendency to overheat and end the race prematurely
  • temperamental and does not like to be driven often
  • expensive and hard to maintain
Now for Steve it includes flashing of "little people"

George is a great guy and it is a terrific facility. It is one of those "if you build it, they will come" kinda places. Not much else in that neck of the woods. George owns/runs Gessford Machine Shop and builds some of the nicest Shelby Aluminum FE's around. I spent a really great day touring his shop and the track. He was completing 6 or so CSX 4k cars when I visited almost 2 years ago.

Question "Secrets"????

db: Just sent you a PM. I'm going to Hastings to get my VMC license. Tell me a speed secret.

Oh, BTW, many people I've talked to weren't aware of the unique handling and short bursts of speed the little Formula Ford is capable of delivering. Check this out...a Ford GT vs a FF:
