When you let them 'patina' they corrode into the ground and you can't replace them. For that reason I keep them polished. It's among my least favorite jobs on the car and it's about every two weeks in the damp and rainy season.
Actually, it's damp out here almost all the time...

So, what is your routine (products, etc)?

I've got one of the small powerballs - works great and cleans up to almost new, alsl use MAAS. Is there a better polish for magnesium?
