TKO Hard to Shift Into 2nd
I have aver 6K miles and it is still a push to put it into second. Has not gotten any better- maybe even worse. Any ideas? Thanks
|
Second gear only?
Is the shifter handle itself hitting on the trim ring/shifter boot/trans tunnel? |
A long shot, but maybe look and see if the shifter is bolted tight under the boot. There should be two bolts.
|
Checked all that stuff. IT is something inside I think. Thanks Probably need to pull it out and see what is up. Only second.
|
Do you have an aftermarket shifter?
|
I had the same problem, hard to shift into second gear...it was hitting the tunnel. Later I broke the shifter off ....due to a crappy weld, rewelded the thing and its all good now.
|
My 600 does not want to take 2nd if reved very high, seems like need' s syncro's, 7500 mi.?

TKOs by nature will not shift easily at high rpms....
The effort needed to swap gears will get easier as the transmission breaks in, but they are not high rev transmissions unless you have some mods done. |

No...
One version of the TKO 600 is marketed with "road race" gear ratios. It's just better matched to engines with larger cams, extremely high rearend ratios, etc. There has to be some significant work done to the TKOs for them to shift easily over 6000. We call it the "Sure Shift" upgrade. It includes disassembling the transmission, modifying the cones on the gears, installing better shift forks, different blocking rings, blueprinting endplays, etc. |
Brent, I'm sure what you're saying is true, but the Tremec website does state "ideal for high performance racing applications."
What RPM they're limited to is not known to the public, as far as I can tell. Personally, I'm not shifting my TKO600 above 6,000 RPM, so hopefully, I don't have to worry about any shifts below that level. |
I know for a fact my TKO shifts pretty darn well going from second to third at just over 6000, which is just under 70MPH. It's my favorite shift.;)
|
They are certainly for high performance applications.....being able to withstand a continuous 600 lb-ft of torque. You could use them in a race car as well....but every box has its limits. Due to the machining on the gear cones, the sizes of the gears themselves (you need some big gears and larger diameter shafts to withstand that much power), and the quality of some of the other components, they just don't like the revs.
|
Had I known that there was a "Sure Shift" option when I purchased my TKO600, I'd probably have opted for it, since I think I opted for nearly everything else including the kitchen sink.
Now if I could find a nice set of magnesium wheels and an electronic EFI that works flawlessly the "first time" and "every time" and is literally plug and play, then I could check off those two options. The SOHC being the last and final option.  ;) |

Although I know the engine builder broke my engine in on a dyno, with everything else being brand new, I did take it easy for the first 1,000 miles. Now, being past that first 1,000 miles, I take it past 5,000 RPM as much as circumstances, time and road will allow. Thank you very much. |

It is, along with replacing some parts.
We also have some techniques to increase the capacity of a TKO 500 or TKO 600 by 15%. It's some cool stuff....and another reason not to buy a T-56. |
I've followed the TKO high speed shift issue for years now and there doesn't seem to be a lot of rhyme or reason to it. Guys that are doing the exact same thing with the exact same trans can have completely different results. It would seem to come to down to either quality control by Tremec, or, how the transmission was originally broken in during the first thousand miles or so. The fact that you've treated your trans so gingerly, I bet it will do high speed shifts without the blink of eye. But, there's only one way to find out....
|
Patrick, shift your trans at 6500 and see what it does.
