Last Balmy Sunday

I decided to take the car out to get the juices flowing (mine and the cars) last Sunday. From Morris Plains I cruised up through Denville into Rockaway/Boonton. It was cold, but not THAT cold. My oil temp would not go over 60c, so I pulled onto a side street to let the car run at a stand still to bring up the temps. All of a sudden, some guy comes running out of his garage waving his hands at me. He wants me to come back to his house so he can see the car. I have nothing better to do, so I reverse into his driveway. I immediately see a three car garage with one of the doors open. Inside, I see a lift with a car on it and a Mercedes under it. After we talked about the SPF for awhile, he invites me into his garage. As soon as I started walking in I notice the car on the lift has huge racing slicks on it. Once I walked in, I got the wind knocked out of me by the beauty of this guys garage. He had 4 Vipers, Two lifts with two Vipers above and below on one. The one on the top was one of 100 made in that color/engine combo. The car in the rear of the garage was a flat out race car. He built it himself. He races Pro and amatuer classes with SCCA. And he trains for PDA. During our conversation, he said If I let him know when I bring the SPF to Lime Rock or Pocono, he will personally sit in as a trainer with me. This made for a very cool Sunday. Maybe you guys know him, his name is Adel.

So you met Adel...He really is one hell of a nice guy..I've known him for several years now through both Bruce's, and the PDA.............So, why are you posting here, when you should be out in your car today.......52 degrees, I'll be outside working on the 65 mustang convertible getting it ready for sale...............Might take that out for a spin a little later on, we'll see how far I get on it..............

Bill S.

PS: My garage wants to be his garage when it grows up

BlueRooster 12-23-2003 08:44 AM

I have to work this morning Bill. BUT, if you are out and about this afternoon I think I can be persuaded to take out the little yellow monster. Post if you are around.

PS My garage just wants a little heat when it grows up.

Chaplin 12-23-2003 08:45 AM

BR-
I was out last sunday too- first time since Thanksgiving. Cold, but not too bad, but I didn't have any encounters as interesting as yours. Sounds like a fun afternoon.

mrmustang 12-23-2003 11:48 AM

Had to take the wife's Sebring convertible out as I could not find the insurance paperwork on the 65 Mustang convertible, but I was out today.................With the top down.............

Today is a good day for a drive. Dare I say that it's even warm today.

I also had my car out last week on 12/29 and 12/30. Weather was perfect both days. I had the same problem as you, couldn't get the oil temp to get up past 40c until I had the car sit and idle for 10 minutes. Afterwards it took me 30 minutes to clean out the carbs. Webers don't like idling in the cold, or at least mine do not.

Weather is supposed to be cold but very nice this weekend, going to try it again. The car just looks soooooo lonely sitting in the garage a is just begging for attention.

Jeez,

There's always a bunch of Jersey guys running with PDA (and others) at Watkins Glen, Pocono and LRP.

No invites are needed and we have a cranky instructor that will intruct in Cobras.

Chaplin 01-06-2004 07:20 AM

Love to go someday, but at the moment, I have no way of getting my car to any of those venues.

Rick,

That is why God made U-HAUL!!!!!!

Chaplin 01-06-2004 08:23 AM

I'm not Rick! Rick's the guy who should get back to work! (Rdorman in this case):)

Problem with UHaul is I don't have a tow vehicle either so I have to rent a truck and trailer, which I had to do for the DMV inspection. And if you've ever rented from Uhaul, you know what an unpleasant experience that is. But some sort of tow vehicle is on the way for the spring- wife is almost convinced;)

John McMahon 01-06-2004 09:01 AM

OOPS!!!

My bad, doing 12 things at once and I posted too quick w/o comprehending!

klayfish 01-06-2004 09:46 AM

I had the car out on Saturday. Had been sitting for about 3 weeks. I almost forget how loud and fast it is when I haven't driven it in a while. Not to mention cold tires, cold road and lots of horsepower can be uh.....slick.

John,
Please don't list those 12 things you're trying to do at once...remember this is a family channel. :JEKYLHYDE :D

Chaplin,
I'm in the same boat as you. No tow vehicle (though I'm trying to soften the wife up) and no trailer. I had to borrow my father-in-laws truck and my mechanics trailer to get out to DVSFIII and will do the same for DVSFIV. And I backed out of a date at Watkins Glen because of no transportation for the Cobra. But if you live within 2 hours or so, drive. I drive to Pocono. Yeah, I worry about it breaking down. And it actually did break one time (luckily some guys there were very friendly and did a temp fix so I could drive home). But it's such a good time, you don't want to miss it. I'm addicted. Now I'm even trying to convince the wife to let me buy a cheap track car, so I can beat the snot out of that all the time instead of always the Cobra.

Guys,

Hate to get into your thread, but couldn't resist saying here in the Valley of the Sun I drove the other day in short sleeves and the sun shone. It was probably 70 deg or so. BTW no oil temp problems.

have a nice winter.

BlueRooster 01-06-2004 10:13 AM

Chaplin: You can make it to Pocono and Lime Rock easily. 2 Hours approx for both. The spring is coming...quick. PDA seems to be a great start. I'm gonna have to duck to keep my helmet under the rollbar.

Roscoe 01-07-2004 11:32 AM

Chaplin,
I ran up at pocono and drove up and back...no problem. There are plenty of guys with trailers so in case of a mishap you will have someone that will trailer you home.
Roscoe

and 'yes' John.....I'll be there this year.

Eat me,
Roscoe

RACER X #99 01-07-2004 11:50 AM

Pocono is a good place to get started with Open Track.

It's sort of like when you were a kid and you start out in the kiddie pool and then work you way up the the big pool with the diving board.

The Glen has a diving board.;)

Cranky

Roscoe,

That's great news.

...now blow me!

No excuses gents! If ya wanna go bad enough, you'll find a way to get there.

My Mantra...

Pocono = Ruth Buzzi
Watkins Glen = Pam Anderson

mrmustang 01-07-2004 12:00 PM

JM,

I have to ask, if Pocono is= Ruth Buzzi, and The Glen=Pam Anderson, what does VIR equal.

Bill S.

PS: Yes, I will be at the glen at least once this year, and yes, I will have a car out on the track........Will have to get Roger to arrange a lead follow session for me though..................

Chaplin 01-07-2004 01:42 PM

Roscoe/BR-
Let me know when you guys are going. Maybe I'll take a ride up there with you first and check it out before I take the car up there. I've got to conserve mileage, I only get 3,000 a year you know:)
