NJ registration

Hi
I am ready to get the paper work on my car.
can anyone tell me how much will it cost to register the car and inspect it.
I have the MSO, I know someone who did not have the MSO and titled the car in a nother state and all he needs to do now is get NJ plates.
It cost him about $300. Is it easier to do it the way he did it?
