Default North Carolina registration

I just came across a build page for someone in North Carolina. They were doing a Caterham 7 but they had found that for emissons testing North Carolina uses the later of the fram or engine to determine emissions requirements.

My engine is way beyond emissions legal even though it would probably pass if it was just a sniffer test, but would not stand a chance if they checked for vapor cannistors or an OBD-II connector.

Is this the way it is. Is it still possible to do the out of state title as a 65 and transfer in?

Thanks,

Default Emissions Testing and Title

A Cobra will be classified as a "custom built vehicle" in North Carolina. They are exempt from emissions testing. But, they must still pass the state safety inspection.

Here's the definition from the Title Registration Manual. See the following web site. http://www.ncdot.org/dmv/vehicle_ser...leteManual.pdf

"A custom built vehicle is completely reconstructed or assembled from new or used parts. The vehicle will be registered showing the make as Custom-Built, and the year the vehicle was built will be the designated year model."

My Venom is titled as a 2002 Custom-Built.

Thanks, that is a relief. After getting your reply I read through the rest of the journal from the website I mentioned. He also eventually found that customs are exempt even though it isn't well known to inspectors and the inspection system.
