Default Weber 44 IDF carbs not lining up?

I have a 302 Weber 44 IDF setup. I was looking up into the manifold port and saw the carb body is not lining up with the manifold. Is this a big deal?

P.S. How do you post a full sized pic inside this box?
Thanks!

This is more common than you would think. I have the same thing on the manifold I am working with, and will be correcting it as needed. You can either build up the area with a good epoxy (rough up the area to be bonded first) or add weld material and the grind and port match the manifold to the throttle bores. Epoxy is used commomly by those that change the interior shape of 4 bbl manifolds. You will most likely find similar mismatching at the mating surface of the head.

Rick,

Is this going to cause a flow problem? What kind of epoxy are you using? What will you use to machine the built up areas, a grinder?

I would like to thank you for all the input. You and many others (Sal, Dean L., Kris, etc...) have been a huge help and inspiration for my build. Your dedication to 'getting it right' has inspired me to do the same.

Even though I'm putting a sbf in a 427 car (temporarily-just to get on the road), my goals have evolved into a more original theme. I'm going to try and replicate CSX 3020.

The Mallory electric fuel pump is a no go, in it's place-Stewart Warner 240-A's. The stainless hose and red and blue fittings are going to be replaced with black hose and original style fittings. Webers instead of carb. I'm seriously looking into a single stage rangoon red paint instead of a modern 2 stage paint. Black or white side-pipes instead of the Jet Hot silver, so on and so forth.

Thanks again,
John

JB weld would work OK, that is what I will probably use. There are other epoxies that would work too but at this moment I am not sure of the Brand names. As far as machining or grinding it afterwards, I use a High speed 20,000+ RPM Makita grinder that will hold tools with 1/4" diameter shafts. Get a good round 1/2"- 5/8" carbide cutter and an tapered arbor that will accept tapered abrasive rolls and you will have all you need.

If you use some type of 10mm thick phenolic spacer (which you should in order to keep the heat from creeping up to the carbs and boil the gasoline there) you can flare the inside of the spacers to match to the two openings.
That mismatch should not be a problem though.
The mismatch the other way round would certainly have to be corrected.
The intake manifold is probably made to accept 48IDA/IDF.
You should check the manifold to head mismatch. More important to match up there because of the rectangular shape.

Rick,

Don't you worry about a hunk of that stuff coming loose and sticking a valve open or something?

Just wondering...

Eljaro, how do I determine what intake I have as there are no markings on it?

ENTDOC, I don't know who did the vacuum lines. I bought the setup as you see it off eBay. I don't have a clue what the fittings in the rear inlets are for! In fact, I'm so clueless on Webers, I don't know what the vacuum set up is for?!

Anyone have a better idea of what the rear inlets are for? What is the function of the vacuum lines, vacuum advance for distributor?

Overall, what do you think of the setup (see my gallery)?

I like the setup. the fittings in the back are vacuum fittings also, maybe the distributor does not need as strong of a signal as power brakes need. If you remove the vacuun setup(if it is not needed on your car) you can just plug the fittings on the manifold , it will look cleaner. I would be interested in buying the vacuum setup if you do not need it. My GT40 has power brakes.

ENTDOC, what type of GT40 are you building? Are you on GT40s.com, if so what is your username? I would like to see your car! These are my pre-RCR GT40 days.

Make me an offer on the vacuum setup. Who put that photo in my original post-How did you do that?!

Hi.tech,
All intakes for Webers were made for the biggest Webers available.
Downdraft there is only the 48mm max. Even those do not match. Intake is always bigger, fortunately.
I would not worry about that mismatch.

Thanks Eljaro,
Should I put the spacers on? Where do you get them?

With the spacers you prevent the carbs from absorbing the heat from the manifold. The carbs heat up the gasoline in the bowl which starts to boil and dumps raw gasoline into the throats. No good for starting nor for the rings.
I even made myself some washers from the same material to be put under the screw heads. The heat transfer is minimal. No more gasoline dripping onto the manifold and no more gasoline smell. It works !
I got the 10 mm thick spacers from Inglese.
I had to reduce their heights to 6mm though because I was having some clearance problems with the hood.

I would contact CB Performance. Here is a link to an insulator:

http://www.cbperformance.com/catalog.asp?ProductID=541

Here is a link to aircleaners. I have some of these for my car and they are NICE!

http://www.cbperformance.com/catalog.asp?ProductID=550

I would not sweat that mismatch.

Happy to help! One really nice thing about the down draft webers is that most VW shops can get parts for MUCH less than the shops that support American iron. If you want to see the aircleaners one day, let me know.

spl310,
Swing that baby over here. But be careful, I might put you to work.

I went digging in my storage unit - all parts for motor have been found. Scattered in like a 100 boxes. I found a brand new MSD distibutor (8598) perfect for my roller cam. I had forgotten about many of the parts so it was like Christmas.
