Default Timing

Why do Webers seem to like more initial timing? Is it that they are traditionally rich at idle?

Rick, I was thinking the same thing about the total. Many guys seem to be running 36-40 degs but my engine builder said he would shoot me if I bumped my timing up from 32. He is not a weber guy so I wonder if the same rules apply to webers that apply to 4 barrels?

Any engine combo has an ideal mixture & ignition timing requirement- do you not think that if a 4bbl equipped engine only requires 32° to make maximum power that your weber setup that is not delivering the goods; ie over rich.
REMEMBER-- If you have two similar spec same cubic capacity engines and one requires only 32° total adv to make the same HP as the other which required 38°, the guy that built the 32° engine knew what he was doing. The problem with your weber carbs stems mainly from the amount of overlap & duration of your camshaft ,but a 'well engineered' large 50mm+ TBI would be of huge benefit particularly on that 380ci monster and a properly set up 4bbl would also outperform the webers which must run out of air flow capacity well before redline.
