Default Who's racing to finish a car before WSCB 2007?

If you are registered for WSCB 2007 and you are currently working hard to finish your cars in time, it would be great to hear how its going and who is starting with the most most difficult or challenging situations and planning to still make it on time. Last year we had several people who worked right up to the wire, literally the night before and they still made it and some drove them! It would be great to hear from some of you and share any lofty goals, stories, and plans so we can watch this unfold between now January to May, as we draw closer. Several people have written into WSCB as they are registering about new cars getting built now, new paint jobs, new engine installs, suspension re-do's, various upgrades. I was amazed by some of the people who made it last year.
  • Car Type?
  • Status: Not started / Just Getting Started / On the home stretch
  • Situation: New/Upgrading/Mods?
  • %Complete today
  • Do you think you'll make it?

Tell us your stories if you have any, planning any late evenings in the garage between now and May 17th?

I'm set to bring my car to Tom at FE Specialties in Sacramento on Feb 2nd to rebuild the engine. He says it will be no problem to get it done in time. I should get it to his shop by 2pm on the 2nd. If anyone is intrested in the progress and are in the neighborhood you can check in from time to time. I will probably drop in occaisonally to check on things...but it's about 3 hours to Sac from Quincy.

I'll keep you posted.

Tom

With any luck, my conversion from a holley carb to a fuel injection system should be complete by next week. Stacked intake manifold, Redline cpu, along with all the new fuel lines, pump, filter and so on. With any luck, maybe it will actually fire up.
The new Cobra high-back seats and simpson belts are just waiting to be bolted in. Also replaced the old rattling glasspacks with 30 inch cobrapacks in the sidepipes.
Had to replace the water pump (leaking). Will replace two motor seals next week where some drips have developed, maybe from too little use. Also discovered the thermostat had been installed backwards.
JBL Dave says my parts are soon coming in order to upgrade my brakes to the Wilwoods they're currently running. Maybe I'll be able to actually brake come track day! Can't wait!

Hey Paul,

That is a coincidence as I too am in the process of converting the BossJBL to EFI. I should be able to start putting things back together next week and hope to have it running in 3 weeks or so. Should have it all sorted by the Bash, knock on wood… I’m looking forward to seeing your car.

Talk soon, John

Hi John,
I finally posted some photos of my car on the site today. Pre-EFI, of course.

I also forgot to mention I'll be sending off the dampers to be rebuilt while working on the brake conversion. It's just as well everything's taking longer than expected. It would be tough having it all ready to go while it's still the middle of winter!

Looking forward to seeing your car as well. I didn't see any other JBL's on the list yet. Any others coming so far?

-Paul

Hey Paul,

That thing is really sweet looking. I didn't realize how well the car has been kept. It's really kind of a rare original piece, you know. Very nice.

I spoke with Dave a few weeks ago and unfortunately sounded like he was backing out. Richard came out last year and we spent most of the day testing damper and sway settings. JBL spends more time trying not to sell cars as they do selling them, which I can appreciate. I wish Dave was coming up with a chassis though. The car would get a lot of exposure and I know folks would appreciate having the wild JBL eye-candy present.

I know Dave just finished a car for a guy in So Cal who says he wants to come to the Bash but I don’t know anything about him or the car. I’ll give Dave a call and get his number.

For now, it looks like just you and me. One JBL at the party is a very rare occurrence and two is damn near unheard of.

Talk soon, John

Seeing lots of different posts by attendees stating they have cars with new or upgraded engines, upgrades, or recent paint jobs going on right now.

I stopped by a friends place last weekend who was working on a Cobra for a customer attending, and the car was about as far torn down as you could possibly get it; no engine, no drivetrain just waiting for a new Red paint job. It will be interesting to see who finishes on time.

Default Race is over

The race to get my engine rebuilt before the 2007 Bash is over. Rebuilt the transmission, engine and added the fuel injection this winter and have started to put miles on the car now that the weather is getting better. I think the car is finally ready for this year's Bash.
Now the question is will I break it again this year? (last year at the Bash expasion tank seam broke-big water leak)

Lamaluv-
Did you have someone in the Boise area work on the EFI software and tuning? I just made an appointment with Performance Solutions for later this month to try to tune mine, which is still very rough after the EFI conversion. Anybody else you might recommend there? Thanks!
-Paul

PS- Can't wait to see that motor up close-it looks amazing!

Paul you have a PM.

Thanks a lot Sean, it was my present to the old girl as she was 25 years old in December. Decided she needed a heart transplant like old Carrol. If it was good for Shelby it's good enough my girl.

Great looking engine...mine should be done by the end of the month so I can break it in prior to the BASH!

Default Contest with prize

Hey Duane we need to have a contest to see who came the closest to not having their car ready for the Bash. Do something like the distance award that you give. I'm sure someone will push their car on a trailer and push it off in Sparks, getting it running just in time for the Saturday drive. We could call it the "Better Late Than Never" award.

My racing partner is having a Factory Five Coupe being built back in Rhode Island. It should be finished next week. It WILL be at the BASH! I am leaving from Phoenix on April 24th to go get it. Wait until you see the paint on this coupe. It is state of the art new technology in automotive paint.

Default Completely stripped down and re-do stage as of April 7th.

Hey Dick,

Actually, it's kind of funny that you mention it. I was just over at Gary Cook's of GT Auto's home place and where he even has cars at his house in addition to his shop that he's doing for various friends getting them ready for the Bash, working on them after work and weekends.

You should see the older NAF car he's trying to get ready in time now. I mean it is COMPLETELY stripped down this weekend, there is nothing on the car but the 1980s body, chassis, and the 427 FE engine assembly is completely in pieces, still all needs to be re-assembled, body work and paint yet to be completed, the entire engine compartment and interior is really rough all neededing cleanup or sanding and panting or replacement and restoration; OH MY GOSH! Just crazy. Much more difficult than putting together a new car by a long shot. Building my Unique and ERA with new parts was a joke compared to doing what he's trying to pull off in 30 days or less up till the Bash. I just called back over there trying to see if someone could get a picture of it; you would not believe it. I'll post it later if I can get one of it. So far, I've heard of no other car more disassembled than this one and trying to make it; and he has a few others at the shop getting complete engine/suspension overhauls at the same time, along with another car we are building together. Talk about living and breathing cars, whew! We'll see if he makes it on little Don's Red NAF.

Anyone have anything more outrageous than this to talk about?

Well...all the parts are in...some were on back order....and the engine should be completed by Tuesday or Wednesday May 1 - 2. Then run-in and dynotuning...should be ready for pick up and breakin by May 12th when I return from a trip. I will be doing a lot of breakin driving in the few days before the BASH and track day...getting close to the wire...I just hate parts on back order!!!!!

One of my heads just blew a water leak on the number 3 cylinder (not a gasket, but literally the inside of the head). A new head is being shipped out, and the car should be back in motion by at least Friday (05/04/07).

Timing is everything...I had taken it to have it dyno'd, and on the inspection ride with the tech, the head blew...when we got back to his shop, you could smell the water in the exhaust, see white smoke puffing out, and see water dripping out of the passenger side pipe. Luckily there was another shop, literally 1 minute away, that took the car, pulled the head and diagnosed the issue.
