WSCB - What, Friday alternative suggestions?
Hi Folks,
While it's still fresh in the brain... Track Day is great, but there are a few (15%) who've asked for an alternative to do while others are at Track Day. In my opinion, there is nothing better to do than participate or come hang out with us at Track Day. If you can think of it, we'll take notes... QUESTION: So...What could possibly be as good or better to do than participate or watch Cobras, Coupes, GT40s at Track Day Friday? A. Tour National Auto Museum, and group drive out to the track and back B. Tahoe Drive to South Shore C. Bingo at the Casino :) D. Hang out in the Summit Store What else? |
Vote for National Auto Museum tour
|
Museum tour would be good.

Playmate car wash?
|
The professor has my proxy although having spent a lot of time around the Lake in years past, there are several different ways to drive to or around the lake that are breathtaking.
|
E. Trip to Virgina City and spend some time walking around town. Or other historical towns in the area.
|
Going to Virginia City or Carson City would be fun.
Would also like to see maybe a cruise on Saturday night to downtown Reno and maybe do a car show there. I am sure we can work a deal with Harrah's Car Museum. They do events there. We could tour the museum while are cars are being shown. I have been to the museum so I am one who would elect to stay and watch cars. What better place to have a car show than at the museum. "Hey, we could call it "Night At The Museum" like the movie. Just no prehistoric beast coming to life oh yeah we drive cobra's. :) |
Friday and Saturday:
Museum would be good as well as drives to the lake or Carson City. Maps should be made up and included in the registration packet. Make this options that people can do on their own. Friday evening or Saturday Evening: I think that their is a scheduled car show held at Summit Racing which might be cool to attend as a group. Also insead of speakers a mini seminar either Friday or Saturday evening might be good to hold. A couple of suggestions might be: - How to build a set of headers for your Cobra. - Suspension set up 101. - How to assemble a short block or how to port heads. - Maybe conduct this seminar at Dynamic Motorsports. - Racing or open track 101 (class room) |
Strip club with everyone wearing their event shirts. ..........Don't say you didn't think of it...
Morgan's idea of the mini seminars is good, or how about viewing or participating in some Dyno pulls at a local shop? |
I think that having options for people to participate in is a great idea. I also think that the key to success for the Bash remains the KISS principle. A list of optional activities for those not wanting to participating in track day or the car show could be provided in the registration packets. Each activity would have a different individual that coordinates the event (Duane already has a very full plate). Also keep in mind that some individuals are already doing side trips on thier own and maybe the "extra" activities don't need to be organized. I know that doing track day, the cruise and the car show kept me very busy. I have done all three Bashes and maybe by next year I'll want to try something new.

Someone also mentioned having each of the vendors get up on Friday night to pitch who they are and what they do in 10 minutes or less. I could easily do a slideshow, but it would feel like I was at work. If people would like vendors at Friday night to present, let me know. It's another option we could bake into the plan.
BTW: So far Pete's idea sounds like the most fun. Great ideas, keep them coming. THANKS! DC |
Alternative stuff for Friday
How about an autocross at the track. They have that skid pad area that would work (I think). Maybe invite David Bordon to "run it". Might be a bit less intimadating to newer drivers and would give them a reason to try out the performance of the machines. Also they would have another reason to be at the track, view the track day stuff and have lunch included.

Morgan,
I agree with the idea of a "chalk talk" associated with the driving school. At the very least it should occur following lead and follow sessions allowing the participants to practice in the afternoon. A post mortem after the day at the track with some Q&A would also be helpful to the participants. I am basing this opinion on what I observed and the questions that I was asked during and after the track session. Cheers, Pete C |
Playmate car wash??? well, then,,,,
There better be some Chippendales dudes washing my cars!!!
Duane, I like the idea of mini seminars on the Friday eve part. While a track day option wouldnt apply to me, I would be at a 2nd track day if you had one, I would love to go back to Virginia City. Any of the drives to the lake are pretty spectacular around there. I like the directions the ideas and options are going. Its all good. |
Hi folks,
What ever you'all decide, we should put equal WSCB energy into it, just like the other core events. Not everyone wants to do the track-thing and I can dig that. What would be great is to find someone who wants to take charge of this area, plan it with us, and run it. We are building a very strong core team and what will make this event run smooth and efficient is delegating to those who commit their time and truly want to be involved. I think the basic vision Duane has is to make the event better rather than bigger. However, it would be nice to encourage the option of a Track Day Lunch/BBQ where track day participants and non participants (all wscb participants) have lunch together at the track. This could be part of Friday's alternative program. For example, it would be GREAT to see all WSCB folks in the group shot on the track, like we did this year. Lunch was way too slow again this year and I apologize. I thought the food was great but will make changes for next year. We were having some problems getting the corner workers out first thing which put us behind schedule but we worked it out as best we could. I wanted lunch to be staggered in 20 minute intervals as you came in from your sessions but it didn't work out. Next time it will. So, there one idea: have all WSCB non-track day members come out for lunch, group pictures, and possibly a few parade laps. I mean after all, these are cobras were driving here and it would be cool to see 200 of them lined up on the track! I think Morgan's mini seminar idea is great but needs to be Thursday night only and before track. I’d like to see track day activities stay within Thursday & Friday and keep the overall WSBC theme balanced ie, track – social – drive – car show. Morgan, you and I can work on this together and I think it's a great idea. Folks that sign up for the seminar will need to have all tech & reg stuff done ahead of time. Also, Morgan and I will make sure tech inspection runs more smoothly and quickly next year. Sorry again, but I was really short handed Thursday due to the AAA / Nugget event. We couldn't get in to the corral until noon Thursday. Morgan, you were a huge help to me and looking forward to having you on the team! I agree with Duane that Track Day has become an important and popular component overall and I would love to see everyone out there on Friday for a WSCB-Track Day-Lunch-Celebration-BBQ Ho'Down!! Good times and talk soon, John Ps, Duane, I’d like to call Ericka about next years track lunch and get her involved. |
boreal ski area has auto crosses in there parking lot at the summit of I80 but at the track would be better .Keep us all together. How about a NHP high speed escort to the track ?
|
Hey Pete,
Absolutely! This was suppose to happen but didn't. I need Gary B. in the trailer with a good PA system and marking board for morning groups. Also instructor/student groups at the picnic tables with track maps discussing technique, etc. between run sessions. It was good chatting with you and Brian at breakfast. Talk soon, John Ps, did I ever tell you the story about when my friend drove my car?? |
There definately is a need for something to get the entrants by the vendor booths. A seminar or product knowledge meetings are good ideas but from what i gathered over the week-end is The vendors are the last people that want to be seen. This is a shame because there is a lot of knowledge and information at their disposal. We did come to the event to share this the entrants but there wasn't enough time because of the activities being scheduled so close. This is just food for thought. Had a great time at the Nugget.

I very much enjoyed track day, and it was my first time ever on a road course. The only issue we ran into was with the helmet rentals. They were completely unorganized and tried to give a couple of us small helmets because that was all they had. There was no way my big head was fitting in a small, and they eventually found a couple more helmets, but I digress.
The question was about alternatives. One idea is an event that appeals to our wives/lady friends who are good enough to put up with 4 days of Cobra stuff (no disrespect to the women who drive and love Cobras themselves). Something non car related seems like it might be a hit. I cant actually think of good specific example, but maybe someone else can think this one though better. Daryl |
No disrepect taken! I had 2 girls back at the hotel who wanted to go shopping all weekend. There must be something for non-driving type women & men that is entertaining, fun and gives them something to do so we can go driving and tracking. It would work better for everyone.:3DSMILE: :3DSMILE:
