FORD'S MEANEST PRODUCTION ENGINES EVER!

#1 Engine: Flathead V8
Best Chassis: Early cars like T-Buckets and 49 Fords.
Biggest Problem: Poured bearings
Best HP: 112
Best TQ: N/A

#2 Engine: 427 Side Oiler / 428 SCJ
Best Chassis: post 66 Mustang (66-70); 66-70 Cougars;
66-71 Fairlane / Comet / Torino / Falcon
Biggest Problem: Boring the block too big and causing
overheating problems.
Best HP: 425 for 427 / 335 for 428*
Best TQ: 480 for 427 / 440 for 428*
*Rumor has it Ford underrated the 428

#3 Engine: 289 HP
Best chassis: 60-65 Comet / Falcon; 65-66 Mustang
Biggest problem: Heads. -Did we mention heads?
Best HP: 271 (306 in Shelby)
Best TQ: 312 (329 in Shelby)

#4 Engine: BOSS 302
Best chassis: 67-70 Mustang and Cougar
Biggest Problem: Cylinder heads too big for the displacement
Best HP: 290
Best TQ: 290

#5 Engine: 429 SCJ
Best chassis: 70-71 Torino / Falcon / Cyclone, 70-73 Cougar

Biggest Problem: Recognition for its achievements

-They have small write-ups along with each engine they choose; some are pretty interesting. I thought it was strange they didn't include the Cobra under "Best chassis" for the 427 and they also didn't include the HP / TQ ratings for the "Shelby" version of the FE like they did for the 289.
It's a current issue on the shelves now if anyone is interested in reading all the details.

.........I should point out that they do state in the article that: "In choosing these engines it can't be all about HP because other things have to come into play, especially since we're talking a span of 70 years. Hey, a Flathead ain't gonna run with a 4.6. A lot of our picking had to do with heart and soul, and a lot DID revolve around HP and TQ. Therefore, one made it because without it we wouldn't have the others."

Gee, MUSCLE CAR REVIEW didn't bring up my 390, other magazine have, like boat anchor, lump, designed by opec, must have been an oversight. But it sounds great!!!!!!!!!!
