Basically the kit has to be incomplete enough and sufficiently disassembled that Transport Canada does not consider it to be a "vehicle." The problem is that Transport Canada will not tell you in advance what qualifies.

Probably the crew with the most hands-on experience on this is the FFR guys in Canada. You could check with Al Beix, the official FFR rep for Canada, or with any of the individual builders who handled the importation themselves. Suggest you post something on the FFR forum.

cdnus 01-12-2010 02:40 PM

Rollers or complete are NOT imported legally.
To do otherwise leaves you very vulnerable for repercussions.
If you phone F.F. they will explain exactly what they have worked out with T.C. & how you can obtain a partial legal kit.

Mostly true.

You cannot import a roller, no matter how old, as it'll be considered a kit car and is prohibited from importation.

You can import a completed car ONLY if you can document that it was fully assembled at least 15 years ago. Much easier said than done, but it is possible. Usually you need some type of government-issued document to prove its age, such as the original state DMV registration papers.

This is from another thread "It's a tricky thing to do, but can be done, and legal at that. It's not a loophole, it's an allowance that makes it absolutely impossible for a person non-inclined to build, to import a kitcar already built, or at a minimum, consisting of a body and a frame, into Canada." by ARGESS What is he saying ? IT is possible ,it isn't ? link = http://www.clubcobra.com/forums/show...70&postcount=8

Sounds like a total minefield. The link that you posted mentions the following:

"To my knowledge, only Factory Five has bothered to deal with Transport Canada, and actually has established Canadian Custom Tarriff numbers for their two main shipments."

Have you contacted Factory Five directly to find out if they can validate this?

cdnus 01-12-2010 05:49 PM

See #5 post

Your quote-- post #9 is not correct, this IS for the person that IS inclined to build. It does NOT allow you to import a kit already built.
Factory Five is to my limited knowledge the only manufacture to have worked a agreement with T.C. & will soon have a package available for the 33 Ford hot rod kit car for Canada.
Save yourself a lot of effort & call F.F. they will explain the facts of life. Otherwise read the T.C. regulations re: importing kit cars, they are self explanatory.
I did not wish to play dodge ball with them & went the Johnex route & very happy I did.

Just A Question

What are you trying to import, a complete build or a kit? I live in Ontario and had all the proper paperwork from a Canadian manufacture with all my bills for parts and went through HELL to get it titled. There are so many pitfalls that you can run into here in Ontario and Canada just to get titled and then you can run into a insurance problem. There are some people that are getting insurance because they titled the kit as a 65. According to Ontario law "it is considered a FRAUD to title any other year than the year of the build". Now tell me it is worth the risk to have a accident and be told you were insured only because you were a part of a fraud. So in closing do your research and be comfortable with what you are thinking of doing.
Cheers Greg

SDR,

If you truly want a CSX, send the owner of the car a DM or contact someone at Sean Hyland Motorsports to see how they got it into Canada.

Greg and Craig posted some real world experience about the challenges you face in getting a car into Canada. Sounds like you've got the basic info you need to research the situation and puzzle through the process.

Im more on a Backdraft used Superformance budget , Heres the thing , I'm not a mechanic , so I don't want to buy a 15 year old kit some guy build in his garage with a donor pinto and now he thinks is worth 60k . Im sure lots of these are well built , but how the h3!! would I know ? So if I can get a used, factory made roadster for low thirtys I would be happy . But then Transport Canada says " ya no eh " and Im stuck here woundering if I got the B@!!3 , time , money , skills and conviction to build a Factory5 .

Check with Don at D&D Cobra in Quebec. He'll build it to what ever completion you want.
I've been quite satisfied with the quality of his cars. Mind you I did assemble mine and made a few mod's along the way.

I hate to break it to you, but you will not find a used Superformance in Canada for low $30s. They are a very high-quality product and are in very limited supply, so their value is MUCH higher in Canada than what you usually see in the U.S.

Forget about Backdraft, as you can't get one up here.

Ask around, but frankly I doubt you could build a nice car for that price either.
