Man, I've never heard of that either. And intuitively that makes no sense whatsoever.  On the rear though, I have a PVC tube vent that runs about six or so inches straight up from the pumpkin to allow venting without losing oil. Short of running it to a cooler of some sort, I don't know why you'd ever do it differently.
