Thought this was interesting. I had the original axles material tested and rockwell tested today.

Material is: 1215
HRc: 41-44 on surface, tester would not go low enough for inside (case hardened)

If they are 1215 then that explains why they broke. 1215 is a resulphurized free machining steel which is not suitable for structural applications. It has very low strength and harden ability. Make sure the replacements are made from 4340 or 9310 series.

Yeah..I was scratching my head at that one. We tested it 3 times to make sure it was correct. I can't figure out how they made it 50 years without breaking!

Apparently the case hardening gave them some strength, which you exceeded with your current power level.
