Jay did you break down and buy the go pro without getting an external mic option? I have been on the fence waiting for an option with an external mic.

Yes, and I got over it. The engine sound in this video was all captured with the camera in the grill. You can actually hear the fan over the motor at times. I have also begun using a digital recorder that I velcro to the passenger foot box (only catch is the blinker sounds like a machine gun).

If they bring an external mic model to the market I will likely buy it as well. I'd like to have 2 or more of these so I can bet multiple angles on a single drive.

Making this clip (and I don't consider it anywhere near pro-quality or well edited) was a 6 hour exercise (with a few hours of learning and waiting for a PC to catchup on the video).

Ok... I broke down also and went with the GoPro before they put out the external mic option.
My first attempt at the GoPro.

This is NOT where to mount a GoPro HD in a Cobra!

YouTube - ‪Talimena Drive in a Cobra‬‏

All we recorded is wind noise and the perspective is from a passenger in the back seat instead of the driver!
So far the dash behind the windshield is my best location even with the reflection when the sun is out!

Just picked up a GoPro HD Hero 2 camera. Video is great. Audio is so-so. Below test shots are taken with camera mounted on inner rollbar w/ GoPro rollbar mount.

At slow speeds, the audio is picking up a crazy creaking noise.

At normal speeds, you don’t hear the creak, but the pipes are somewhat muffled by the wind noise.

I agree the audio is somewhat lacking. I wish I had external mic. I too get a fair amount of wind noise, especially where its mounted in this video. Although you get an idea what the car sounds like at full song. Hell, you can even here the tire screachin when I point the nose at the wall.

Now an Indy car on the other hand, doesn't have quite the issue with wind noise

Here is some footage from a year ago. Went out surfing the day before, and got pretty pounded. Unfortunately some moisture began to condense on the lens for this footage.

For comparison, this was taken with the non HD version. Pretty prehistoric in comparison
