Weird Cobra related health question
someone told me that it is unhealthy to drive in a car with side pipes next to your head, because you could get lung cancer from the fumes.
I can understand some carbon monoxide concerns (try to keep air moving) and hearing loss (wear ear plugs), but is cancer a realistic possibility? I'm no doctor. . . thanks |
That takes the cake for the dumbest thing I ever heard. Maybe if you consider that the fumes into your lungs are "second hand smoke" then look out for the devil called cancer. Your chances of fume cancer are greater following a 30 year old pickup truck in Oaklahoma then driving a sidepiped Cobra on the open road.

Just driving these cars is the death risk, not lung cancer from them. |

Seriously now, I would think the risk is minimal and certainly a lot smaller than the risk of some gawker hitting and killing you while trying to take your picture at 90 mph  |
I really don't see a problem!
At any speed the fumes are going to be behind you. The noise may be of some concern - but what the hell - that's why we have these cars. TL |
The faster you drive the farther the fumes are behind you, thus the safer you are from lung cancer. I rest my case.

"Cobras with exhaust fumes don't kill people. Cobras with big-assed engines kill people."

Big Block or Small Block?

It's not the fumes, it's the brake dust!

If you are driving fast enough then it is not a problem.

Only in California.

You bring up lots of good points. Just to clarify, this dude was not anti Cobras at all, in fact he likes them, he just thought it could be a health risk (while sitting in traffic, etc) because he believes that car exhaust, especially, untreated (no emission controls) is a carcinogen, so the more you’re exposed, the more chance of problems for you.
So, I guess the real question is, Is car exhaust a carcinogen or will it just kill you due to the CO content? Come to think of it, we know gas fumes are a carcinogen, so I suppose if we fuel our cars ourselves, we have a great chance of cancer, then driving a Cobra because, all cars use gas. . . . Thanks for all of the answers, I’m concluding that it’s just another one of those crazy things people say. . . . . |
Hey, lets be serious ...the only REAL health issue you need to be concerned with while driving any Cobra, is the sudden stop of the car after you leave the road in mid air. OH....SH*T......BLAMMMM!

Even if my Cobra's fumes give lung cancer i would think that i wouldn't have to worry about it. On the other hand the guy driving the Vette that always seems to be behind me would. Maybe i should put a warning sign on the back of my car " If your car is fast enough to stay on my ass - you might be at risk of Lung Cancer".

Side pipes causing cancer? Did this person hear this on Oprah from the Jenny McCarthy School of Medicine? Does this person also believe drinking milk causes autism?
You get more fumes from the bloke in front of you or sitting in traffic. There is no way that any sort of actual study could have been performed on this question. Your friend has been huffing gas... DD |
