Default Halibrand Magnesium 427 Wheels

Having seen and read magnesium wheel runs that sputter and fizzle, I wanted to do my part in seeing that mags could get made for our 427's, SOON! I contacted Richard at Halibrand (president) and asked him how our list is going. He said that he's close and that he's in a better position to get run made compared to last year. I asked him for answers on what I thought would be popular questions:

1. Wheels are the same sizes per originals (and Trigo) and backspacing, 15"x7.5" fronts and 15"x9.5" rears, 6 pin.
2. He will also run 5 pin (adapted) wheels. The adapters will be made of aluminum.
3. Wheels will be finished in Dow 7 (for pickling) and powdercoated gold in the centers. The lips will be machined.
4. Wheels will be coated inside for the inherent porosity issues of magnesium.
5. Wheels will say 'Halibrand' on back ONLY, per 60's originals.
6. Cost TBD but competetive. Stay tuned.
7. Deposit is $1,250, by mid January.

Anyone want to join the list of buyers? Please only add yourself if you are serious. It's ok if you're on Halibrand's list already. They will be combined/compared. Let's see if we can do it this time!

I have no documentation of '60's photos but my Cobra II's from '91 have the logo on the face. Maybe Ron can find a shot in his archive.

Chas, these Halibrand wheels look like an original run and do not appear to have Halibrand embossed on the front:

Also, your "Halibrand" is different than other later production run done in the early 2000's.

Well, I don't know. Does Halibrand or maybe you have a Lay-A-Way plan? Let me think about it and I'll get back to you.

Oh, alright. Go ahead and put my name on the list.

ERA Chas,
I don't know firsthand. Richard said the originals didn't have 'Halibrand' on the front, just some later runs. He has quite a bit of info on originals (process, details, etc).
I'm gonna double check my Halibrands on my 88 Autokraft. I don't know that the embossing is the same as yours. Plus, they're 16's

Ok. So far, 2 Rodneys.

Actually ERAChas, I do have pretty good pics of the mags on CSX3026. When I get home I'll try and zoom in.

Yes Rod, the company changed hands after my set several times. Ted was long gone by '91. I'm not sure that mine were done using Ted's molds-hence the 'II' designation.

STOP! Puh-leeze

Don't get Halibrand sidetracked with FIA's.

BTW, there's was CC member with magnesium FIA's for sale some time back.

Could that be right?
The last run for Halibrand was in 2000?

Where's patrickt? Does he own a set?
I think we can 'challenge' him to get a set

I'm here, and mostly I'm thinking that ERAChas has a bogus set of wheels. You know, like the Rolex watches that you can buy from guys carrying suitcases down by Battery Park.

And what might make you think that?

I think it was the early 2000's, say around 2003-2004, but that's what I heard. No factual evidence to back it up.

I can't believe wheels that will cost about $3,000 +/- per set will be popular:

a. in this economy,
b. during the Holidays, and
c. not many see the benefit beyond the Trigos they already own.

I hear you but aren't there some purdy cammers being assembled right now?

Maybe you're right. Mag wheels for the replica crowd. What was I thinking?

Come on, now!

Maybe one of the CSX/SPF dealers, ERA and/or Kirkham (or whatever manufacturer) would like to have a set or two in inventory for future customers.

Say, those three Kirkhams that will be built with SOHC engines, one twin tubrocharged and one fully polished. Darren?

Default 427 Wheels

The original wheels (Front) had 7.500x15 and Cobra II cast in one of the spokes no
Halibrand name

That looks like credible evidence.

Unless you put a torch to the wheel material I will continue to have my doubts. Without hijacking the thread, can you quickly remind me what transmission you have in your ERA?
