Just because someone spent X dollars building a car, it does not necessarily mean the car is worth X dollars.

For instance, I could spend $50K modifying a roller to put a new Powerstroke diesel in it. I expect this would ruin the value for most people, and it would be costly to change it back to accept a typical engine. It wouldn't be worth much, even though a $100K was invested.

Maybe that was a ridiculous example to make a point, but you need to understand what that 100K was spent on, and make sure you personally value each item as much as the owner did. For resale later you should question how the market would value those items, regardless of your opinion.

It always bothers me when someone spends a fortune building something and then sells it with only a couple hundred mile on it. Short of a tragic story, I question the motivation, especially when you build a half million dollar house in a ghetto. Not saying a SPF is a equivalent to a bad neighborhood, but this is extremely high end for a SPF.

There's a CSX glass car on eBay now for about $85000 I think. Saw the ad earlier today but I'm on my phone and can't look it up at the moment. But might want to look before you buy.

Do the research, don't jump in too quickly (it's a buyer's market, particularly at that $ level) and enjoy whatever you buy.

Thanks to everyone who responded both in the thread and with PM's. I learned enough to make my decision a much more educated one. I appreciate the insight that you've provided.

I looked the car over carefully and it is beautifully done. I'll probably take it out for a road test later in the week. After that I'll decide if I'm going to make an offer, it's in there on consignment. We'll see if the seller is motivated, I understand it's part of a larger collection. I don't buy blue sky, I've been playing with cars since the early 60's.

He's re-listed the car at a BIN price of $87.5k. The odd thing about the add is he states the car has a Ford 9" rear-end. Either he doesn't know much about the car or the rear-end has been replaced.

I have owned SPF1061 since new: 63,000mi and 10 years ago. Rock solid car. I wanted a real driver and that's what I got. I could not be happier with my car and would do exactly the same thing over again. Dennis Olthoff (and his dad, Bob) originally commissioned the car and Dennis has maintained it ever since. Olthoff Racing is the best Superformance shop in the country. Period.
Having said all that...North of $90k for a 2nd hand Superformance - ANY Superformance - is really pushing the envelope in my book. If you are going to spend that kind of money, there are a lot of very high quality options available to you. You have gotten polite (where is Patrick?) and honest advice in this thread. Do your due diligence. This Superformance might be exactly the car you are looking for....or you could perhaps find an even higher end replica in this price strata....or a really nice Superformance for quite a bit less. Just know there are a lot of good cars out there and it is a buyer's market. Good luck and enjoy the ride!

Can someone more knowledgeable than me point out where the $100k was spent? The base price for an SPF is $43k. The price for the Roush engine with stack injection polished comes in at $27k. Looks like there are some SPF options added like glovebox, and 17" wheels. Shocks look like they might be upgraded. $2200 for a TKO600. Then add on for clutch/flywheel/bellhousing - maybe $2k? That brings it to about $75k. So $25k in mark up/installation/delivery fees?

I actually sold this car brand new to the original owner...so, I am very familiar with it...in addition, he actually has north of 100K invested in this MKIII...he cut absolutely NO corners, and went with the best of the best of everything...

As a Dealer...I don't bat an eye at what a customer wants, or asks for...it is their money, and their money to spend. The comical part of this is...here at Superformance, we make our money on selling the "Roller"...if a customer want's a crazy engine from Roush, Ford, Shelby, etc...or crazy aftermarket customizations...they order those directly from the manufacturer...and have them shipped directly to the installer, we just put them in touch with right people...as I am sure you know the process...the customer pays me ONLY for the roller, pays Roush/Shelby/Ford/Etc directly for the engine, then pays the installer directly for the install/trans/options/etc...

So...if someone want's to come to me, lay out his "dream" car...I will make it happen...if someone comes to me looking for maybe a "bargain" per se...I will do my best by finding them a good "pre-owned" car...

In regards to your questions...YES, I loved working with this guy...he knew exactly what he wanted, I put together everything for him...and the deal was done...no tire kicking, no year long endless emails and phone calls...he is a class act, and I am sorry to see he is letting it go!

All of the tech specs of the engine can be found here...its the 427IR...previous owner also had some custom work done by clay cook to the covers and the stack.
