BTW, just respond by asking "What's your annual salary with bonuses, sick pay and vacation?"
They might as well ask that question since it's just about the same question.

Most people are in such Awe over these cars, they can't imagine how much one must cost. So the same question is asked over and over and over again. I always tell them what they want to hear plus several thousand more.

Would it be rude to reply "tell me how much you make ($) and I'll tell you if you can afford one"?

I just tell 'em I don't know, my grandma left it to me when she passed last year, and then I tear up a little and excuse myself.

Do not see a thing wrong with someone wanting to know what I paid for something.I would never hesitate to ask, sure I did when gearing up to buy and build my own car.Whenever I sell one of my projects always have the ledger totals for actual cost of everything it took to build that vehicle never including labor other than the hrs. I always get that question when showing the car and always say with a straight face; "I put a great deal of time and money into it", then "Yeah, but how much did you pay." Response "A lot". They always get the hint from there. "How much does a kit cost?" reply "It depends, there are a lot of them out there."
Vague, purposley so, regardless how many times they ask.

It is somewhat rude to ask how much it cost, and even worse when they walk up to the car and start grabbing the fenders to see if it is "real". I wonder if they would appreciate me grabbing their wife's b**bs to see if they were "real" and asking how much he paid for them.

Get used to it, that and the "other" question, "is it real"???
What you answer is up to you and how sincere the question was put to you....
Personally, I like this reponce the best and have used it on more than one occasion..

I personally don't think it's that rude (ballsy maybe so) when someone asks how much my Shelby costs. The price of the cars are not confidential and can be easily obtained on the web. In fact, Shelby advertises the purchase price. Its public info. The cost of a good 427 build is also able to be priced out.
The prices of all these cars are out there in the public domain and no secret.
I think most ask because they are impressed with the car and just want to know all about it and the cost is a natural thing to want to know.

"I have no idea, it's my moms car"
Coming from an old guy like me, it always leaves them startled long enough for me to excuse myself and walk away.

It has nothing to do with anyone's car being so special. I guess it really depends on how you were raised.
I was raised that how much I make or how much I spend is no ones business but my accountant, my better half and me.
It really depends on why they are asking. Are they interested in building/buying one or are they just nosey?

An admittedly vague answer to a somewhat nosey question, but actually a fairly accurate answer. I just checked and for 2012 the price is from $49,600 to $111,600 (Coupe to ZR1). I would suspect that the majority our cars would fall into that range, exactly where depends on many factors … let the person that asked the question figure it out ...

I do the same thing. Most people have no concept of a replica beyond the old dune buggies built on VW frames they remember from their youth. I stammer around awhile and describe the engine, independent suspension, things that are faithful to the originals, etc, until I finally just blurt out - look, I could have bought a new Corvette for what I have iin this thing and probably had money left over. That typically causes a slack jaw and lack of comprehension for a moment.

I just tell them a little less than the real one, because it's the same except for the body.. then they ask what a real one goes for, which I quote at 1.5M...

Hey rusty take a chill pill. You seem like a real hot head but I'll try to reply with some decorum. The way I was raised its impolite and nosy to ask someone that you dont know how much they make, how much their jewelry costs, how much they paid for their house, cars, watch etc etc. If you're interested in those things you can find out on your own by asking subtle questions without getting in someone's personal business. This has nothing to do with being better than anyone, I guess some people are more private than others.
Thanks for calling me an a$$hole though, you're an excellent member of the club cobra community

Price
I tell them they can buy one for $20,000 to $130,000 depend on what they want.
Most don't know what a real one or fake cost, they just curious. Most are very surprised you can buy one for $40,000. I think they watch to much Barret Jackson TV.
If they ask how much for mine then I add about $5K to what I think it's worth.
There was a guy with a hot rod at a car show and someone asked what he wanted for it. It was not for sale but he gave the guy a price of $10,000 more than he really wanted. The guy wrote him a check and drove off into the sunset. You never know!
