Best way to go

Hi all

I am leaving San Francisco in a few days and heading to Carmel and Monterey.

Looking at the map I was considering heading south and then dropping down to Santa Cruz and doing the coast road to Carmel. That way driving the 17mile etc.



or

Would you start on the 1 and do the coast road all the way from San Francisco? Is the scenery better. Can you see the water etc. Is it too big of a drive this coast road?

Time is not an issue.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks guys.

From what I remember. The best ride is from Carmel onward. I do remember seeing some hang-glider guys just south of SF.

I live in Santa Cruz and the drive along the coast is spectacular. My recommendation would be to drive South from San Francisco on Hwy 280 and cut over to to Hwy 1 South on Hwy 92. That ride will take you through Half Moon Bay and down the coast through Santa Cruz on your way to Carmel.

Map it out for distance and time. It's not a difficult drive, but it will take you some time. It's definitely worth it.

Ill second Ralphy that the best part of the coast heading south from SF is between Carmel and San Luis Obispo. If you do that try to take the time to stop at Hearst Castle. Takes a couple of hours but well worth it.
If you're going to stop in Carmel give yourself at least half a day to window shop the downtown. A full day if you want to wander the side streets and look at the houses and cottages. The town is only 1 square mile but looking at everything can take some time.
Could go on and on about Carmel and Highway 1 South.

Not sure if I'm right. But I saw in a gas station and what looked like a big, well made tubular bell. Also some guy had a bunch of stacked stones in different varieties in his front yard, art worthy. My guess is these were devices used to detect earth quakes? Carmel is so unique. OH! take a ride inland into the Carmel Valley, very nice drive. Clint Eastwood was once mayor of Carmel.

Yes I will stay in Carmel. Anne has the Hearst Castle on the list. Thanks confirms her thoughts of a visit.

Just planning the road trip now....

Really enjoying San Fran. We have done a lot here in a short time. I love the buildings and the history.

I reluctantly jumped on the "Hop On and Hop Off" double decker buses - but they have been a great way to see the city. The guides on the bus really know their stuff.

Either that or they just make it up as they go, but I was really impressed...

The only down has been the trip over the Golden Gate that was covered in fog. So I have planned the trip tomorrow to start a little later, to get a midday crossing and hope it will be clear.
