Depending on the exhaust set up the exhaust pulses are going to create a distinct sound.
The 289 and early 302 used the same 15426378 firing order as the FE.

Your can run either cam. There are still a lot of SB running the older firing order.

I am running a 347 with the new firing order. Most people who hear it swear it is a BB. Some of those people were gear heads. I not saying they sound the same. I am saying the difference is not so overwhelming that anyone can tell the difference.

As I stated before, opinions we all have and on that we can all agree.Certainly have no desire to butt heads on a subject with such strong opposing opinions, they never go anywhere and certainly accomplish nothing.

I think OldDog has stumbled on the answer. The SB owners simply can't tell the difference. It makes perfect sense for them not to own an FE. In fact, I kind of wish I couldn't tell the difference -- it would have saved me a couple of bucks. But, unfortunately, I can.

You're such as d*ck.
No wonder FFR and SB guys hate you.
And ERA, KMP, CSX, nuns and deaf and blind guys too, come to think of it....

If they sound different, it's not just because of bore. Casting density is a larger part of it.
Don't make generalized empirical statements. You obviously never heard a 718HP 427 SB or a 358 680HP SB. Blindfolded, you can't tell the difference among them and an FE, stroked or not.
Sound has little to do with bore size. Other sound experts above not withstanding.
All the statements on this thread are generalized seems to me. So why am I not allowed?

I suppose there are SB 427s out there built up to such a degree the sound is so close to a BB many may think it is. They are the exception. In GENERAL BB sound different than SB 427s. At least to me.

The chart left off 428 FE bore 4.13 stroke 3.98
406 FE bore 4.13 stroke 3.78
410 FE bore 4.05 stroke 3.98
390 FE bore 4.05 stroke 3.78

The small block 427 is 4.125 bore and 4.00 stroke. That is pretty close to a 428.
I suppose you could use an old 289 cam and get the old firing order.

Years ago, I saw a 1966 aluminum FE with a steel 360 truck crankshaft. It belonged to Paul Addams and he gave me a tee shirt. Either Keith Kraft or Kuntz was there, too.
I think his RPM was in stratosphere.

The BB Chevy guys do something with a 4 7 swap on camshafts, I think.

And now from the Dark Side... get a BB Chevy!! Same great BB sound (different firing order but great deep BB sound) 427 block, steel forged crank, merlin heads,TBI fuel injection , 550 plus H.P and save the $15000 for something else for your Hot Rod that looks like a Cobra,or something nice for your wife, always a good idea when you have a Cobra replica.

I tend to agree with you, Thor. I'd rather have a BBC than a SBF.

Oh yeah I forgot the reason that a BB sound different from a SB is bore size, valve size, and exhaust port size, which in a BB is generally bigger. Like with fire arms say you take an AR15 which is a hyper velocity 22.cal, small exit port and you get a loud CRACK. Now take a say30 06 cal. close in velocity but a larger exit port and you get a loud BOOM.Drive train noise can also be a slight factor like in a 426 Hemi you get a lot of rattle and ping on top of combustion noise.

I must admit there is a very different sound from a big and small block. That being said I own one of each and happen to like the sb sound as It winds up nice and tight. I think the Idle is where I find the most pleasure in the sound of a big block.

I have had a 427 W CODE Cougar GT-E which is a hydraulic lifter 1968 side oiler with headers, camshaft with less than .500 lift and a few minor mods.

That was when I was in high school and early college. I remember it was at least as quick as most 428CJ Mustangs. With open headers, it did sound good. Probably better after all, that was 40 years ago.

Maybe next time, I will get an Iron Bock monster FE but the 427 Windsor is fine.

To answer the original question.....
Yes, you do need one, by the very fact that you've asked the question.
Ignorance is bliss. You are now a man.
You know what you have to do.

Well sorry my learned colleagues-I'm gonna F it up.

Nowhere has this guy said he's looking for the last HP, lowest lap time, 24 hour endurance or last hundredth. He just wants to have the sound that you bad-asses do.

And yes, you can get enough of that sound from a top-oil 390-445 / 500HP build from any of our resident builders for at least $5K less than the legend. A mild .500" lift SFT cam will give enough audible chaos to dazzle the parking lot sheep and tingle your toes. Which seems your priority.

You can build that killer SO when you're less concerned about how it sounds and more interested in port velocity, head flow, cam events and blueprinting specs.
Which may never happen.

We got another guy here who waxes (literally) incessantly and sublimely about the noise his FE makes with exactly the same non-SideOiler combination I outline above. He spent the saved money on extra rollbars and pedicures.
His name starts with Patrick and ends with a .......

The original poster also says"or can I get that sound from a different engine build". And the answer is yes,you will just love the sound from a BB Chevy or Mopar. I had a ride in an Arntz with a 426 Hemi it was fantastic and the was sound Fantastic . Fords are great and if your a Ford guy wear the blue oval with pride but don't limit your world.
