Turn signals inop, rectangular tail lites, stop lite isolation relay box
This set-up is bustin' my chops! noTurn signals front or back. Have a diagram from Kirkham and era. Slight wiring differences, and Ive tried both with no joy.
Both show flasher unit marked L, P, & B. I've tried 2 flashers, one just arrived today from Moss motors, and both are marked L, P, and X. Kirkham dia shows L as the dash light, ERA shows L as going to the relay box, and P going to the dash lite. Neither way works for me. I hear a relay click when I select L or R on the turn sig switch, but no lights, I don't know whats going on in the isolation box, but thats where I'm losing power to the bulbs.
Yes I've searched, but found nothing helpful.
Anyone have a diagram of the inside of the box ?

Just a suggestion, but check your grounds.

Are you using a single bulb with double filament? What is the number of the Trailer wiring adapter you have?

I feel your pain - I just went through signal light trouble shooting on my ERA. I don't know if Kirkham's system operates the same as ERAs but I was told to concentrate on the front turn signals as the rear won't function without the front ones working. Is this a new car or did they stop working recently? Besides grounds also check fuses if any.

Thanks for chiming in guys.
kirkham, metal body so ground is everywhere. (but I added jumper wires just to be sure)
Just now finishing rebuild from engine fire 12 yrs ago. Wiring harness is from Kirkham in 2001, original style. They don't use currently. All firewall electrical components are new .
There is no "trailer adapter", but it does have the "stop light isolator relay" so the single bulb, dual filiment bulb (1157),same as front, can be used for stop and turn lite. Have no idea whats going on in that box ! more later.

I believe the box you are referring to allows the duel filament, single bulb rear taillight to also function as a turn signal when your foot is on the brake pedal. Consider the senerio, rear taillights, left side, one bulb, low and bright filaments; headlights on, stopped at a stop light, car rolling down hill so foot on brake, and making a left turn... The bright filament needs to be on for the brake light and yet still flash for the turn signal on the left side.
I have Wiring Diagrams that I just finished for CSX chassis that use a similar system. And the new Superformance MKII Slabsides chassis also uses this system. Both of their wiring diagrams (CSX and Slabside) are similar in layout. Drop me an offline email and I'll give you my phone number. We'll get you blinking in no time.

If you look at the wire side of the flasher socket, mounting pad down:
Upper left: Power source (ERA brown wire)
Upper right: To warning light (ERA blue wire)
Lower right: To signal switch (ERA yellow wire)

Fixed! Turns out it was two (simple) problems: the schematic had "L" & "P" reversed on the flasher unit itself, and the turn sw (VW) is not making good contact in the "left turn" position, which was the position I was using since I was working from the left side of the car. The turn sw is a whole story by itself, so I won't go there !
Blas: thanks for your offer, but not necessary now. The gauges I bought from you all seem to be working well , don't have the oil temp hooked up yet, waiting for first oil change to install sender.
Thanks all,
Ted

The magic box simply has a couple of diodes in it. They are a one way valve for electricity so when the brakes and indicators are on it doesn't let the brake light signal go to both lights, which are brakes and indicators. That makes them stop blinking and both come on as brakes.

The owners manual for the 289 shows a complete wiring diagram including the relay connections of the turn signal box. When I was designing my wiring I built my own box using a couple Radio Shack relays and following the wiring diagram. Once you study the wiring diagram all the mystery will vanish. You may have a bad relay.
