Avon tires... why did everybody keep it a secret (just kidding)?
Holy Space Balls! I just drove my car with new Avons (and FIA wheels) on, and the difference from BB's is absolutely ridiculous. It is a night/day experience.
Of course, my tittle is facetious. More than one guy here has written about how much difference lays on Avons (for the better) and it is so true. Better handling, less noise, less rock chipping going on, you name it.
I do not see me going back any time soon...

Hey Hector, glad you like them. You're talking a modern radial tire with compounds to match and comparing it to a bias ply old mold race tire. You could always put an AVON or GOODYEAR big letter stencil to them? They look great as is and you already know how they work. Make sure you have a good alignment in the car either way. The soft compound grips and rides nice but don't plan on it lasting like a multi mile radial.

They are 245/60-15V (front) and 295/50-15V (rear).

Thanks, ol' Nick. They work great. I appreciate all your help. I do have the stencils, but I am enjoying the black wall a lot, so I don't know that i will use them just yet.
Noticed I got rid of the wind wings and visors? I like that look so much better. I have some screws (mm) coming, but until then, you can see the original screws sticking out a bit... it really doesnt bother me that much, but I dont want my children to get caught on them, etc...

Thank you. They're the sizes I'm considering for my Kirkham. I have GY Billboards on it at the moment and they look the business, but they tramline badly, which does impact on the enjoyment, especially if " she who must be obeyed" is with me because she is constantly twitching and flinching as the car moves around.

While not inexpensive, the Avons are worth every penny. You get what you pay for.....that is why the BFG T/As are cheaper!

Back in about 2001 I put the first set of GY BB's on my car. The wandering and darting sometimes made Peggy and I look like a couple of bobble heads.  I was kinda embarrassed by the handling when she was with me.
In the beginning I started with tire pressure in the 22-24 pound range on the street. After a few months I experimented with gradually raising the pressure until I found my comfort point. For street driving I have them at 32 psi front, 30 psi rear. What a difference in handling! I didn't see any irregular tread wear in about 5,000 miles.
I am on my second set of GY BB's. By year 5 of ownership of the first set, there was very obvious sidewall cracking, and people were finger pointing. The tread depth was still very good, but I had to toss them because of the sidewall issue.
This second set isn't a year old yet and the first signs of the cracking are just barely becoming noticeable. When its time to toss these, I'll buy the Avons.

Avons offer huge amounts of grip and a great ride - just don't expect them to last too far north of 4000 miles. It's the soft tyre/huge grip trade-off. But if they keep your pride and joy on the black stuff, they're worth every penny.

The GY BBs grip brilliantly and they're never going to throw you at the scenery, but they are hard work on anything less than billiard table smooth roads. Once you have the confidence in them, you can pretty much let them find their own course within reason, but they don't inspire confidence on poor surfaces.
I'm going with the Avons next time.

Painted them. Now that I know I like them so much, next time around (because paint will chip/wear off) I will powder coat them.

When is Goodyear going to come into todays drivers world and market a RADIAL BILLBOARD.. Why any serious driver would put a Bias ply tire on a kick ass Cobra is a mystery to me..........Lets hear what this starts....

"Serious driver......Bias ply...."?
Does that then mean that all the F1 drivers aren't "serious" drivers? 
The GY Billboards are race tyres, so it isn't fair or reasonable to criticise them for not making them in radials IMO.

After much thought, I decided to go minimalistic on the Avons, instead of the big, in-your-face style of the BB's:
R Front
R Rear
L Front
L Rear
I tried a dark blue, a white, and the yellow. Yellow won. I'm pretty happy.

Why would anyone put a BFG tire on there Cobra is more of a question or any other radial in a 15 inch size besides an Avon...

Replacing BillBoards
Sorry to all the Purists out there. I replaced the dryrot, cracking GY BillBoards with the BFG T/A's. Glad I did. The ride and stability is 100% better and more confortable to drive. As much as I love the look of the BB's, I can't help but appreciated my Cobra more, now with the new radials. Just My Two Cents.........Art

I'm not a purist, there is absolutely no performance with the BFG, they are down right dangerous tires for a powerful car...at least the GYB have some grip...
