If you want to make an exact replica or as close as possible, go for it. Nobody is saying anything against it, but if you like a Cobra and want to drive it and make it your own, do what you want. Who really cares? It isn't your car anyhow. And yes you could go wrong. Why use old 1960 technology when so many newer things exist if you aren't trying to duplicate an original? |

Thor, the way I see it is that you're getting what you wanted. You had the opportunity to let it die out several months ago, but decided to stoke the fire one more time.
There are several topics on Club Cobra that never end in anything but war...you've been here for almost 9 years, you should be fully aware of that. |
Blykins, I like a spirited debate it is healthy for all. I thought that I started this line I should add to it the day the new owner took delivery of the car. But we all got the old the only true engines in a Cobra are the Ford 260, 289, 427, and the 428, period. I added that Shelby also had a couple of other engines that he used the 221 which was used by AC for prototype , and the 390 which was used in the Flip Top or The Turd. All Fords but if you wanted a correct replica would also have provenance. That's all I did, I did not reignite the Chevy in a Cobra(or my HotRod that is shaped like a Cobra) debate again.

However, when you are replicating something then replicate it. Once you start taking artistic license you begin a trajectory off the correct path. Some trajectory's are minor some very simply are going in the entirely wrong direction. There is a clear correct path to replicate these cars properly to original specs or close to it. Fortunately there were many variations of the original car that allow us to pick and choose what we like and provide us with variety of choices while still being correct or close to it. Bumperettes, no bumpers, quick jacks or no quick jacks, choice of FE BB or SB, Webbers for race 289s, Single or Dual quad, wire wheels, slab side, wide hip ...etc..you get the drift. There is so much to work with in the universe of what is correct for a Cobra it just boggles my mind why anyone would use a Chevy powerplant unless cost is a major factor. Then I understand. However, don't sit and tell me how Chevy motors belong in a Cobra replica or are better for a "Cobra replica" and how wonderful they are for Cobra replicas. However, if you want to tell me you chose it because you personally feel its a better powerplant, breaths better, sounds better whatever that's fine. That's based on your own personal view and choosing the power plant you personally like better. I can live with that. There are some things that are Verboten in the Cobra world and Chevy power is at the top of the list when you are restoring or recreating or replicating a Shelby Cobra or an AC Cobra. Sorry. Doesn't mean you are evil or bad in using Chevy power. Just means.. well, as far as replicating a Cobra you just fell off the wagon. What's next "Tri power"? If I was trying to replicate a 1965 Grand Sport Vette why would I use an FE? The 1941 Willys is not an apples to apples analogy. Those cars have been hot rodded for decades but if you were replicating an original Willys, then yes you have to follow the original recipe' to get it right. If you put a Cobra body shell over a VW chassis is it still a Cobra replica? what about a Cobra shell on top of a monster truck chassis. Is that a Cobra too? When do you cross the line when it no longer is a "Cobra" as we universally and generally refer to them. Where is the line? Follow the receipe or stay close and you are good in my book. Otherwise don't talk to me. Just kidding. ;) |
Real 1 , do you ever order off the menu??? At Burger King "have it your way" only as long as it is the way stated on the menu board??? Do you always salute and perform in proficient Military manner, by the book??? (and I think there only 5 Grand Sports made and that was 1963 and the current rendition of AC cars put Chevy engines in there continuation Cobra.) What's next Dogs and Cats living together, Mass Hysteria???

But when did Burger King begin selling one of the most iconic cars in history on their menu. The analogy sucks! :) |
The Burger King analogy was about Real 1's limited imagination. The Corvette Grand Sport was a correction, they were produced in 1963 and 1966 Not 1965.

How much imagination is there in building a Cobra replica? About the same. None. :p He's an "originalist." That's all. And so am I, but to a slightly lesser extent, since my Kirkham is polished aluminum and has a billet aluminum suspension. :) |
Personally, I was quite pleased when BK brought back the "Yumbo," for a limited time. Yessirreeee, I ate a lot of Yumbos back in college. Yep, just like stepping back in time....:D

A Yumbo?!
How...Chevy...of you. |

Not only was it absolutely delicious, but it had my four basic food groups as well: Salt, Fat, Sugar, and Goo. Hmmm, I'm craving one now as I write this.:cool:

I miss Chas. He would have given me "like" on the "Yumbo for The Dumbo" joke.

I think Yumbos were tertiary market things.
Update: Yumbos did exist. But they were discontinued in '74 (Pat's salad days), which makes him....... |
YUMBO for the DUMBO...:LOL::LOL::LOL:
