Actually most seem to be on back to front.  I tend to think that the original design probably had the curved edge pointing toward the car with the flat surface facing out. They were probably curved to follow the body's contour thereby moving the lifting point under the load thereby decreasing the leverage and load on the mounting bolts. The problem of course is that the curve in the quick jacks doesn't tend to match many car contours.
