Didn't 'ol Carroll himself say that "427" was the model name, not the engine type or displacement?
Or are we gonna argue over what he meant?

That's the way I see it too. He put a "benchmark" name on the car, but did lots of other things depending on circumstances at the time.

Actually, you're so confused now that you've lost your original point, which was what defines a kit car versus a replica:
A. "state of assembly" (i.e., "If it's in boxes....."), or
B. engine manufacturer (only Ford engines) need apply (e.g., no Viper V10's).
