It was never a question about going for gloss black on my wheels. However, I would never powdercoat them. Have heard about too many issues with cracking/metal fatigue following powdercoating. I am a spraypainter so it was no issue to spray mine. Howevever even if I wasn't a painter, I would never powdercoat them.

As Fordracing65 mentioned, I rarely wash mine either. I like the brake dust look on them too.

If the powercoater uses a low enough temp to cure there is no problem with powder coating. All new wheels are aluminum and they are all powder coated from the factory.

As startling to me is the comment about Plasti-dip will destroy the underlying paint. I thought that was the whole purpose of these type coatings - a temporary change that could later be peeled off without damage to the original paint.

Yeah, first time I've ever heard of Plasti-dip attacking other paint.

Never seen it myself, either.
